Hey, I've got this thing that I want to share with you.
Donno where to post this but I feel at home in the mapping section
and most users might be comming from here aswell so..

The thing is TextureHub a website with "swapping skills" as the base idea.
Let me explain: ;)

[insert 2 seconds of silence here]

In short:

It's a site you can add your own work to, promote yourself,
help out mod teams and mappers, get connected with people who need you.
Get help for your project, and maybe find artists for your team.
It's all for non comercial work, mods and privat work but it could lead
you to what you want.
It needs help to get started and time to work but if you are willing to
try it should be a good addition to the modding society.

[give 3 seconds for shock to settle then..]

More info if you are interrested:

I was thinking that there is loads of mappers and small mod projects
around that need support with stuff they make,
like a certain texture a map prop or a skin.
And sometimes not so easy to find someone willing to help out.

My idea was to make a site that would support non comercial
developers/mappers, artists with this, and it would be a good way for artists
to present and share their work and maybe even get connected with a mod team.
It would work as a graphic hub, making connections between artists and
as an advertising spot for your work.

It will mostly be about environment textures/skinning but modeling
and mapping could be covered if I get the right staff/members. :)
We would also cover other game related news.

[deep breath here and go..]

It's not a tutorial site, we seek artists that already have finnished that stage,
but of course we could have some if requested and someone wants to write one.
(Also there is plenty of good tutorial sites around anyways.)

So far we have only experience with Half Life modding so artists with experience
from modding other games are incurraged to join.

We would like to supplie downloads for older stuff aswell, like wad files
for HL, so if you got some of the old classics, please share them.
We can only host work submitted by the original artist,
or if given a written permission by the original artist.
This is strictly non comercial and the artist will only recive credits for
his work, but this is also a good way to make connections.

I will start off by uploading all my work but this project will only work
if other artists are willing to share some of their work and maybe taking up
some requests.

The site will be shaped by it's users so you could very much be appart of
how this site will be, by adding news, articles, share work and links yourself.
And off course decide the level off your comitment.

This is all very early days and only time will tell if it's a good idea,
but give it a chance and hang in there things might happen.

So in short, if you got some sort of talent within game modding and want
to share it with someone that needs it, I would like to present your work
and make the connection.

[some funky music here and fade in url]

Welcome to www.texturehub.net

[right thats a wrap, thank you]

So, lemme get this straight, it's a modding community where we contribute stuff we've already made (textures, etc) so that others may use them freely and stuff? I guess I'll sign up, as long as there's no real commitment (aka release stuff every day) needed.

that is the basics of it Watevaman, make something and release it, maybe even help someone out with making them a panther tank ;)

Signed up as well. The idea is great, but I guess we'll see 5% contribute and 95% leech everything.

Yeah the leaching will be strong in this one. :)

Then again thats ok I think, I mean lots of us guys that have been
making textures and props for games for free for a while now only do
it to help out and promote ourself anyway, so I thought trying to
gather all of the helping hands into one location will make it easyer
for anyone trying to find us, that also goes for companies that look
for talented people that are willing to give that little bit extra to
get into the retail games world.
Showing you are willing to do stuff for free with a high quality and
commitment is a good talent to have when applying for work.

Also it's good for improving your skills when you are surrounded by
artists with the same interrest.

There is no requirement to submit anything, you don't have to do anything.
But doing nothing will kill this idea from the start,
so why not give it a chance, it can only help you... I think.
The most helpfull thing for the site would be that you pic up a
request to help someone with a project.
But again it might take a while before mappers mods and
the likes find out about the site so check in from time to time
to see if there is a request you could take on.

Most of all it's got to be fun, so if you think it's hard work don't do it. :)

No idea how much help I'll be, but I'll be more than happy to try.

Theres a few of these sites kicking up, this looks quite good. And coming from an experienced Texture'r ;)
It looks a like its only about textures, the title; and image gallery, but some of the forums suggest maps and models... is it mixed or what?
Have a look how www.gameflood.com and see how they're all doing it, its kinda nice, even has a HL2 mod maker feature..

Yeah it's for anything game related, the only reason that the
focus is on textures and skins is because I can't model and so could
not promise any work beeing done in that department.
But if we have members that can and want to share models then
that would be great.
(Btw read our FAQ)

Mapwork would be presented if you like to show progress or
models/textures you are using.
It's actually quite informal, just post what you like and we can shape things after that.

Yeah gameflood looks good and I think it's in the same line as moddb,
I was thinking more of a workshop with a small and friendly environment. :)

(Nice to have you onboard to Watchtower ;))
