Zafod was awesome indeed. Played many good games there. Your screen seems to capture that mood. Keep it up. ;)

Good start, I'm assuming you're going to sourceify the map? It looks pretty bland to be honest. Also maybe be creative and extend the river past the cliffs and add some more bridges/buildings down there to simulate the cliffs instead of making it look unrealistic.

Thoughts and suggestions only mate :)

thanks for the suggestions, one bad thing about redoing old maps is if you want to stay true to them, you kind of have to sacrifice a little. i can extend the river on one side but not the other side because of the allies side of the map is right behind the wall there. i will try to spruce it up before launch, thanks again

ill not let you zafod fans down, the spawns are different, but i mean who cares its a spawn right. its close in scale, what takes 10 seconds to walk in the old version takes 10 to walk here, or close to it, so its close in scale, but when u go in this map, there will be no doubt u are playing zafod. ill start working on this again, ill lay schwetzingen down for a bit and try to get zafod worthy of beta release for u all to test, thanks.

well, i worked on it for 3 hours last night and i think im going to pretty much start over with it. i mean i could release it as is if i wanted but i wouldnt be happy with it. my vis blocking is not working like i want so to keep the fps down i had to strip down the map of props and use textures and i dont like it. dont worry guys, i will release this soon, but it will be a good map when i do. i was thinking of making the water area look like its part of a sewage system instead of just a pool type thing there, what do you guys think about that. i cant take the water one way any further, even in 3d skybox, because of the allies side is behind the wall. i can extend it someway on the other side but you lose the ability to easily run across the bank up there, so i was thinking of a fake sewer entrance on both sides, thanks.

Alternatively, you could slightly alter the Allied side by having the 'river' run through that side and have a couple of bridges etc and any buildings that are where the 'river' goes could be altered slightly to either span the 'river' or be moved to the riverside.

Ok, i have been busy with schwetzingen so i hadnt spent time on zafod lately. since releasing beta schwetzingen, i am going to work on zafod. i am starting over and going to try to sourcify this a little. the center area of the old map was a bridge with two walls on the sides an a building at each end, now the water underneat bridge was just like a pool and went no where in map. what i am going to do is on one side of the bridge, the water will exit as if it is heading toward a river or something. i will add to what you see here in the 3d skybox and have it go straight for a bit then make a turn out of the picture. on the other side i have put a simple sewage looking drain thingy, i can get complicated with this one because on the other side of the wall is the allie spawn area and its alot lower in altitude. i have a working rope bridge on the side the river is on to add some wow to the map. the building here is going to be spruced up alot but here is what i have at the moment.

make sure you put that option to climb on someones head to go in the window on the right hill going towards Germans.

rrwalkertr

actually, i think i have it at the moment where you dont need to climb on someones head, i totally missed that, i thought the hole was large enough and low enough you could go right in, if it takes two people to get in there on the old, i will try to keep true to that, thanks

here is the problem with ports. ok, in dod 1.3 or even back in beta, what could you do with maps? mainly use textures with windows on them and displacements had to be done in terrain builders which was near impossible for great detail right? now, someone said to me in these forums, sourcify the map, make the water look like it has reason to be there. i have zafod on this machine and i run it, time how long it takes to get places and then map it. the bridge is a near replica of the bridge in zafod, the size and so forth. i had simple walls around it as the old, but who wants to play the old zafod in source? what is a port anyway? if you want the old zafod, ill freaking get the rmf and do it exactly, but i dont think thats what you want. i promise the map will play like the old zafod and will remind you of it, but i am not going to port a map and make it look as crappy as the old maps looked. source can run far more advanced maps with props and so forth, so thats what ill do, sorry to so up front on this topic but jeeze, people want ports to be sourcified and people want them to be exactly like the old ones, you cant have both

ill take updated pics tomorrow night, and see if u liket hem better

You can get all pissed off if you want. Up to you.

Voicing my opinoin, to which what a forum is for. IMHO; you can't call a map Zaphod and not make it as true to the original as possible (which doesn't include a bridge on the grass surrounding the middle area).

I think you will find that there will always be a problem porting over old maps to Source. Unless you keep it as near as dammit to the original, you will always attract criticism from certain contributors on this forum.

Certain maps attract a very loyal following, and are often thought of as old friends. You've only got to look at the guff that has been spouted about dod_caen to realise this.

In my opinion, some old maps lend themselves easily for porting over to Source virtually as is (santos, charlie/strand, northbound/strasbourg for example), whereas the majority will certainly benefit from being enhanced, using the tools now at the disposal of the source mappers.

As long as you keep the layout, ambience and signatures true, I think you are quite within your right to add improvements where possible. I'm sure that if the orginal mappers had the opportunities that we now have, they would have done so too.

Ultimately, though, it's the players out there (many of whom don't visit these forums) that will decide the fate of your map. If they don't like what you have done, they won't play it.

im not all pissed off, i just wish people would make up their minds on ports, do we sourcify them or do we make them crappy looking as they appear to us now in 1.3

RosietheRiveter

Hmmmm, take a look at strand (charlie), newcastle (sherman), cal_coire (chemille), fuel_b3 (kraftstoff), dust_sl (dust) , lennon (lennon_b3), strasbourg_b1(northbound), bayeux_rc1 (harrington), santos_b1 (saints) , and for the most part diversion_b1. All faithful ports of the gameplay and layout. All Sourcified enough to be a Source map and not a visually 1.3 map that happens to run on the Source engine.

Modifying an obscure custom 1.3 map to a source version will receive fewer comments than working on one of the top 20 1.3 favs.

It's up to the mappers themselves to decide how their maps will look/play/etc.... a touch of the ol' artistic license. As long as it plays well, runs well, and is fun, what else matters?
