[WIP]Crates and Barrels

Well, figured I might as well post these here since I worked on 'em enough for a thread.

What I'm working on is a reskin pack of the crates and barrels that are in DoD:S. Idea simply came to me last night when I thought of the possibilities and how the props need some updating as next gen textures start rolling on through.

What I have right now is pretty simple, just the fueldrum and the wooden barrel. The fueldrum was a simple 10 minute job and includes normal maps and phong (you can see a bit in the pics below). The wooden barrel is another story. I basically redid the whole thing because I found that I couldn't do much to make it look better using the default texture. Both textures are doubled in size, and I saw no performance hit, but I will do versions with no phong/no normals for those that want them (Guyver :P) both in this resolution and in the default resolution. I've yet to start on the crates, and any reference pictures or ideas of what the text should say (even accurate fonts are GREATLY appreciated) are very much needed and appreciated. :D

For now, here's the fueldrum and the wooden barrel. Barrel top says Schwarzpulver, since I figure there might as well be some gunpowder in 'em.

lol...I'll use the phong/normals. I just don't like the super high res textures because they tend to stand out too much next to default sized stuff.

So, if you do a version with default-sized textures and normals, I'll definitely use them.

Looks good by the way, there's hardly any good barrels or fuel drums out there. Good luck with the crates as well, not many good crates out there either.

lol yeah i always thought that about the high res stuff as well. needs to be a balance so they're still consistent with everything else.

Well, here's a WIP of the crates so far. Using default text and everything basically. Don't think I'll normal and phong these, but if you guys want I can try and see what works best. Sorry if this bumps the topic:

You could normal them...but I don't think phong would look right in my opinion.

Yeah, I think it would be unnecessary. Even normals would be, too, in my opinion. The barrels are more spread out, so PCs can handle normals on those, but these little packages and the crates are everywhere.

Could you make a steel barrel with an open top? Those nights at Colmar are awfully cold and it'd be nice to start a fire in one of those.

I don't think they're hollow on the inside, but if someone hacked the top off or something, it may be possible.

I have no clue, I left that default since my buddy says it doesn't mean anything. Is verpackt correct? What does that mean?

"verpackt" means packed or prepacked. that would make sense.
the word "venpacht" does not exist :)

And I just redid the text. Everywhere it said "venpacht" it now says "verpackt." There are probably other errors, too, heh heh.

I believe it is off (as in, these textures have mipmaps). It's the huge texture size that's giving off the graininess.
