Hi all,

Is this map available for dod:s or dod 1.3 anywhere? I'm not sure if this has been discussed before but i always liked the b3.1 version of thunder much more than the 'new' versions.

Cheers!

OMG someone still cares! Much love to you. Dunno where the map is though. I've been much more adamant and utterly unyielding in attitude towards archiving stuff in better order ever since. I did find these screenshots though:

Oh how i miss that map! Your pictures bring to me feelings of joy ... and pain. I know the devs can't please all the people all the time, but i'm sad to be in the displeased part. I've missed this map since it went.. One of my favorites.

(This map looked very good with cl_fog 2 btw.)

Xerent, my friend, next time we meet in-game, i got your back.

Thunder = Donner now.

As for a Source port of Thunder, this is the closest you'll get for now:

Donner never did replace Thunder, in my estimation.

Thunder has that great, angry, industrial skybox. To be Thunder, the map needs to look like it's been charred, fricaseed, and firebombed under a boiling, rainy sky.

Donner is a light, happy tap-dancer (http://www.artsalive.ca/upload/dan/williamorlowski_03_full.jpg) compared to Thunder's brooding malevolence. Let's not compare the two ever again, mkay? :p

Well, as I was re-playing Unreal II recently (I do retro single-player stuff all the time) I was pondering about how perfect the lighting flashes and thunder was, as well the extremely light drizzle of rain...... and I thought about DOD and dod_thunder. It's the one "atmospheric" thing missing from DOD:S right now.

Yep, the rain is crappy - why - only the Devs know.

They did come to the rescue and fixed the snow when Colmar was released. I'm hoping the same for rain.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see more atmospheric maps.

Zeep, try these...they're not rainy but:

Donner had to be brighter than Thunder because we were getting so many complaints because of Thunder's darkness. Granted if you were playing in a dark room it was awesome... the first version of Thunder was even darker. And I mean really dark... and it had to be in order for the lightning to do it's job of revealing the enemy! :)

And hey, tapdancing is cool! :p Here's another picture I found that compares the first dod_donner (originally dod_thunder3) to dod_thunder. As you can see, the map is mirrored.

Thanks for posting those, Xerent. A couple-three things; first off, those Thunder screens on the right don't look very dark.

Secondly, whenever someone does Thunder properly, they must hang the middle flag straight out like that. Do the right thing, mapper.

Thirdly and lastly, find some appropriate textures to match the feel of Thunder. Don't give us a Source retread. That is all.

The last build of thunder was quite bright, but also the brightness of the picture could be tampered with. Also web browsers tend to display images brighter than their original color profile. Then your monitor could be bright... ;)

The first builds of thunder I made were really, really dark... no pics of those left. :(

Well yes I see your point about the darkness, some monitors out there can be VERY dark, but seriously they could have done a light drizzle (a few drops here and there) and could have added in lighting flashes and thunder, all without sacrificing much ambient light.

Don't get me wrong, I love Donner, but it's just not Thunder to me even by a longshot. I'm one of those weirdos who is really drawn in by a map's ambiance - and dod_donner is to dod_thunder as Hello Kitty is to Transformers. Thunder had that gritty, depressing combat feel; Donner does not.

xerent, if I may ask; why not you? You'd be the perfect one to give us back our Thunder, all sourcified!

That map was fun...played it when I first picked up DoD...I TK'ed a lot due to the darkness, haha. I loved the atmosphere it provided.

I think I do agree that it was a tad too dark, but that kinda was a cool feel to be playing a game that wasnt perfect. I do miss the single texture ground and the puddles, oh the knifing glory that came from the puddles

Sounds like this may be your calling. Or that might just be me yelling out the window for Thunder.

The darkness was great and added so much to the atmosphere in that map. I've always felt that dynamics in maplists are welcome rather than unpleasant. What i mean is, thunder was a great map for being exactly what it was, dark, gritty, puddles. It was a map for which i had to sit up straight when it came up. Axis were hard to see sometimes, wouldn't have it any other way though.

If you were to give it a shot for source i would be very happy. But don't feel compelled to do so. I'm sure after 3 years it'll be quite the challenge.

Someone...please make dod_thunder again...please.

Donner is cool, but no way does it capture what Thunder had... it needs to be dark, tight, it needs rain, it needs lighting flashes, puddles of water and the buildings need to be really badly damaged.

This map worked and was played hard and loved. Don't "improve" perfection... just port it to source, same layout and only make subtle necessary adjustments.

I am sorry but dod_thunder_b3 just does nothing for me, harsh thing to say yes, but true.

dod_zafod needs this treatment too along with quite a few others. They don't have to be masterpieces... quite sick of the 60mb plus blockbusters that take 2 yrs to make (in saying that I do appreciate them too). They just have to be true to the old layout.

I don't know.. maybe someone needs to just copy it...fill it with a dark grey dev textures and play it then make it look good.

It's game play as number 1 for me, most maps I don't even stop to look at the view I am just trying to get to the next objective.

EDIT: Maybe prefix the name? dod_old_thunder.bsp ... dod_old_zafod and so on.

A "dod_old" map is true to an old layout and not expected to have a huge size and top grade graphics?

Don't do this map yet, the rain particlefx are crappy. I want Thunder as much as anyone but not with Laser Rain.
