[WIP] dod_Aachen

This is my first self made map on source dod_Aachen :D

It is very much still in its beta stages I think it has a long way to go before its first public release others tell me its fine but Im never satisfied with it .
Some of the buildings are not finished and none of the insides of the buildings are done well for that matter alot of it is not final . :D

My previous work is flashatnight , avalanche@night .

All comments are welcome about dod_Aachen "NOTE" pics are of a fast compile so lighting is not done !

just a few quick things. the pictures overlooking the bridge show that the fog is a little strong, or if you want it like that, get a good sky for it to blend with.

make sure your textures arent scaled awkwardly, try to stick with default.

some areas look a little dark, but since there is some destruction, use some fire to light it up. or if you want, some lanterns.

Looking good, you need to work on thel lighting, just make sure you take your time with this map and when you get to a point that you think its ready for playtesting then do so. Have fun making the map, I was working on a DoDS map but I got annoyed by it. I'm just working on a CSS map at the moment.

also, work on your interiors. they are pretty empty, and just dont fill them with props. work on making the sizes realistic and architecture to make it more roomy. then put in your tables, chairs, and such

Well thanks for the comments.

The fog is heavy and yes I need it like that to help with the FPS which I have been strugling with for some time to improve I have been remaking some of the buildings which I did a horrible job on the first time around and where loaded with problems since rebuilding some of the houses the FPS is much better . as far as a sky to blend with the fog what would you suggest i have tried many .

The lighting is not a big thing because I only did a fast compile when I took these screen shots on a full compile its fine or alot better.

as for the interiors thanks will do i was just waiting for last to finish those up.

Looks nice,
I think the sky looks too bright compared to the buildings. But that is maybe due to your compile settings as you mentioned. Also try to take a different floor texture in the mill. It looks more realistic if you do not use the one from the wall.

looking very nice so far!

I think the sky looks too bright compared to the buildings.
i do agree. also when looking at the white parts on the ground
it doesn't seem to have the right, matching colour.

i think a darker more green/greyish sky would fit better :)

Yea piu piu looks great now i just need to know what sky looks like that ? take in mind i will be adding snow fall again after i get some other issues resolved i removed it to figure out some FPS problems i was having .

Oh and does anyone know why some clients dont see any fog on my map . I put in the fog to limit visibility but it has to showup for everyone .

i´ve got the same prob too while making the sky for outpost. Changing the tga to vtf by dragging it over vtex.exe, i got the same result.
If you are working with photoshop, there is a nice vtfplugin, that allows you to export to vtf directly with special options for the texture type (sky). It helped me a lot.

piu piu is going to look into it again I am currently overwellemed with just mapping dont even want to try custom textures that may set me back another year :D but thanks for the info b@d it may help piu get me going

Bad I had the same problem before but how I stopped the lines I just go to map/map properties/skybox texture name and that is where I add my skybox in and it has some nice skyboxes EXAMPLE: sky_day01_01 skyboxes, here->

Thanks but I know how to add a sky this problem is coming from a custom sky we are tring to get to work but thanks .
As for the planes I looked in a stock map to see how to make the planes fly by .... kalt

maybe try to deactivate mip-maps when generating the vtf?
i get the same issue when i have my texture-settings on low in dod.

You wouldn't happen to have the vmf file for kalt as well would you? Or would you have the link to the map maybe? I already have sdk flash of course, but no flybys LOL.

Here are a few more updated pics of Aachen I am currently revamping the whole map moving things closer together to improve gameplay and it looks better take in mind lighting is still dark. that will be fixed :D

Well like you said B@d the lighting will be fixed later, so in IMHO I think you are making an awesome map, keep up the great job. :)

I for one am not a big fan of dark maps simply because it's harder to see, but when there's enough lighting like old dod 1.6 cr44_night, then it's a great map. :D

Its snow lol but those pics are with a -dxlevel 80 which makes it look different I hope to have better pics up by this weekend

Well after reworking almost the whole map I think it is just about ready for a public release I will be doing a playtest tonight to check things and if all is ok I will release a beta version in the next few days hopefully .

Some places are a little dark but it's coming along nicely, great job. I know many players have no idea the time it takes in making these maps.
