[WIP] C47 Skytrain/Dakota

Haven't posted anything for a while.

Someone asked me if I could make a crashed plane for a map ages ago so I've been putzing with this in what little freetime I have. I just about finished the diffuse texture tonight.

Obviously this is the "intact" version which is easier to model and make the texture for. Once it's done I'll re-work it in max to pull bits off and dent it up a bit ready to be ploughed into a field somewhere.

Poly count is 8300 including interior.

very cool :)

the texture must be hard for such a large object. what size are you heading for?

Jed-
There's an interior???? (can't see it at all in the photos) Also, in your crashed version you may consider wiping out many details like the landing gear which would not be seen if it where crashed on the ground. Also As long as you already have this completed version, you might consider dropping the gear so somebody could use it as a parked version, although for the life of me I can't figure out why you'd have a parked C47 anywhere near the front lines; the Germans didn't invade England.

Pedro-
If Jed is really concerned about detail, he can always split the texture map into two different files, but that probably wouldn't be necessary.

Actually it was at the start but when I looked up the federal colour references it turns out that post D-Day they swapped the upper surfaces of transport aircraft from green to a more brown colour. The colour isn't final - it's just a "wash" at the moment to get the general layout and I'll probably adjust it as the texture gets more final.

At the moment it's just a 1024x1024 for the exterior, 256x16 for the glass and 512x512 for the interior. It's probably what'll let it down but I don't see the point in wasting texture memory.

Yeah, its a simple boxy one so that at least when you look through the windows you see "something". You wont be able to enter the plane but it makes sense you should be able to see the inside. Although it's not shown in the picture, the rear door comes off too (I'll make it and other small parts seperate props to be strewn in the debris field).

I might well remove a bunch of poly's from the bottom as it'll be on the ground but as I'm sure I'll end up using it for other stuff (maybe a skybox model) it makes sense to model the whole thing.

Sweet ! I like the pin-up idea, is it for HAm & JAm and/or dod :Source?

Trp. Jed

It was a request for a model for DoD map but I'll make it available for Source in general.

Good to hear things are moving along on the H & J front as well.

Looks great, Jed.....would it be possible to make the props look like they're spinning? then we could use like it's in flight?

Blast from zee past...

Of course, if we get a flying version, we'll need a horsa glider that it can tow......and then of course, we'll need a map called.... ;)

pak *cough* pak

lol. Yeah I'm doing a spinning prop version and a scale version you can use in skyboxes. Fuzz and I already discussed an idea for that.

Main goal was a crashed version for Neutrino but it's easier to start with a clean version and beat it up from that.

And yes, I've already started sorting out the damn Pak 40.

any news on this i really need to use this model for my map. thanks

Well the main "flying" undamaged model + texture is done (as seen in the screenshots) but I have no idea who would use it as you'd never technically need that model.

I've made a lower poly skybox model and I've started making a crash landed version. The mapper I made it for is getting back to me soon, I hope on some final details for the crashed texture so when we've agreed on that I'll probably release all three as one "pack"

mmm good job, waitting for the crash version
i think someone could use it to put in the allies spawn of a dod_glider remake for source xD

Trp. Jed
09-03-2007, 06:24 PM
Well the crash version isn't very special - bent props, dented cowling and just a general sad drooping of the control surfaces. I searched for loads of pictures of crashed C-47s and their pretty tough when they belly land.

Any chance of a crashed? - if in time i'll put it in my new DoD:S Machinima called "Their War" make a little scene out of it, could use some extra cutaways.
