Orange Map Subsection.

I know this was posted in a thread about this, but it there a POSSIBILITY that these dod_colorofmychoice_css_wannabe_deathmatch_tower_t rain_map can have their own subdivision under mapping, instead of cluttering up the REAL mapping section?

I expect to get flamed for this, so flame on!!!!

*EDIT* The reason I request this is for two reasons. The first being this may prevent further sarcastic posts (which I myself have indulged in), and second, for the reason stated above.

Actually, I agree.

Ok guys, let's just not get too carried away here. Like it or not, these orange maps (I expect a new grey map trend sooner or later too) belong....well.......ok they don't really belong here. But they don't belong anywhere either, so in the mean time and because setting them aside would only make them even more special, I'm against that.

With that said, there is one good thing with these maps. They generally are named "dod_something_orange_whatever_name_oh-and-I-really-like-my-dog_v2_beta178". When you see "orange", do yourself and these forums a favor and dont even open the thread....

NB: This is a public site, everyone's welcome. Rules for clans/groups out there may be never to host orange maps, but this is the official forum and as such everyone can participate

Ok, much as I may hate these orange etc maps, I do think that they ought to have a separate section.

were not saying dont let them on (well except newb) just have their own little fenced in playground to play in. Becuase they aren't a dod map so much as a generic game map that could work with any game.

lol all you guys up on your high horse crack me up, why do you have to be so serious all the time? Fun style maps have been made for lots of mods, its no big deal, really

You cant get mad at someone for making a fun_arena_rainbow_legoland_final_b2rc12 map. The only reason those even came about was because valve didnt release enough "official" maps from the get go. Consider all the people with FPS problems, Add to that the whole issue with the COF and there you have it... a recipe for dev map following

I think the dev maps have helped sustain an already questionable following. Its not like the dev players are gonna ignore your real map, if its good...

Anyway, I say YES give the dev maps their own section. They deserve it.

l3eeron put it how i wanted to say it. I don't despise dev and colour maps, i just sometimes like to see the normal maps get the attention they deserve because (from what ive heard and expirence) they take longer to make than dev maps and i like the looks of them better. Don't get me wrong when the server brings up a dev map it usually ends up being one of the better games of the night but i like the looks and feel of a map that tries to look like a real place.

The only reason those even came about was because valve didnt release enough "official" maps from the get go.

I disagree. There's scads of custom maps now, and many came out in the first few months after Source was released. They aren't orange maps. That's a more recent trend. It's mindless DM action and requires zero skill to crank one out. I'm not bashing people who play them or make them, I'm just stating a plain truth. They didn't come from a lack of official maps, they came from a lack of pure DM action, which DoD has never been about. That's all that is.

Anyway, I say YES give the dev maps their own section. They deserve it.

I think "deserve" is a bit much. We don't have seperate sub-forums in any of the other content forums for "serious" and "not serious" content. I honestly don't see the need for one in here. Serious mappers who work their butts off to craft and polish maps that look beautiful, play great and are fully optimized are basically making works of art. Of course they're going to get pissed that some hack can use hammer for all of an hour including compile time and whip out a map that fills servers while many of the great custom maps get less than half the attention they deserve.

But, people are playing them. They are maps. This is the mapping forum. They can post about them here. It's that simple. If we do make a sub-forum for them, we'll be making sub-forums for flag caps and det maps. That's getting a bit silly, imo. There is such a thing as too organized. The staff is talking it over.

We don't have seperate sub-forums in any of the other content forums for "serious" and "not serious" content. This is true. I over-looked this.

Yeah, I mean, it's not totally out of the question, but we'll figure something out. We're leaning more towards a sticky for orange map releases. New threads about them will get merged in, etc.

I find people get wayyyy too much praise/credit for making these orange maps.

Although color_blahblah_arena maps are not my preference, I don't think that community members should be penalized because they have made a non standard contribution (like it or not, the mappers are contributing, after all). In fact, I don't believe that they should be given any special treatment (i.e. their own section/sticky) in the slightest. I think that would over emphasize them and create the illusion of more value. If they are treated just like everything else by way of the forums, then they will not be seen as special. All you have to do if you don't prefer them is don't post in that thread - soon enough it will find it's way off the page. ;)

And with that, we're done here. We've pretty much come to the conclusion Moe posted. Like 'em, don't like, whatever. They are still DoD maps, and as such, there's absolutely nothing wrong with them being posted here. If you don't like them and don't like seeing threads about them, just don't post in them. It's that simple. We aren't going to segregate them and we aren't going to create a special forum for them. This is an issue the community needs to come a middle ground on or at least just come to terms with. We aren't going to create or enforce policy that ostracizes a large portion of the community. That's not what we're here for, and frankly, I feel that goes against our job description: Managing the forums, keeping things clean and fostering growth in the community.
