russian models

Hello to the modellers,

I'm undertaking a stalingrad map project despite the lack of a Russian team and Russian content in dod:s. I wanted to ask if any modellers have the time/interest to invest in making some Russian WW2 models that I could use in my map. The main things I would be interested in would be:

A T34 or any Russian tank
A skybox model of German/Russian bombers
Factory style architecture ie. broken walls, girders, half destroyed roofs etc.

And any other things which would be relevant. I have had a search around but can hardly find anything which has been made already. Obviously anyone who made models for the map would be credited to the fullest extent.

Feedback appreciated in advance,

-otF yetihw

Hi! I`m making "russian front" for DODS too :)
Soldiers already done.

Now I`m working on weapons.
I`m nothing understend in mapbuilding, but i think i can help you with russian models. I have models all soviet tanks, and some vehicles, but it high-poly (something about 50 - 60000 polygons).
I can remake it in low-poly and send it to you.

Wow those soldiers look great :D Um.. "How many polygons is optimal for one tank in your map?" translates to me as "blah blah blah blah blah?". In other words I have no idea about such things, however I'm sure people on here can tell you. Would really appreciate your tallent, tanks would be particularly nice. Could be a nice collaboration of map and models in the making.

The other thing that I particularly want is a german bomber skybox model, I don't know if this would be that hard to do considering how small they are and that they don't have to be that detailed. Could someone enlighten me?

Well, if you want your map to run smooth, you don't want 50,000 poly models cluttering it up, for that will lag even the best PC's out there.

I'd say a good count would probably be 10,000 polys or so, because I think the Tiger is about 8,000 and doesn't seem to have any problems or anything.

OK. I will try to decrease number of tank polygons to 6000-7000.

If you could, do you think you could also release the original 50,000-60,000 poly ones, so people like me (I pose in Gmod) can have a higher quality version for fun?

This is not my models. This is a models by Andrey Kurin, relised him for free (except for any commercial use).
I use his models like sample reference for create my own low-poly tank models.
High-poly models of soviet WW2 tanks by Andrey Kurin you can get here: http://www.military3d.boom.ru/ (all Models in LightWave file format).

exactly. dod is based on the european theatre of ww2. so anything from the easternfront (russians) would fit perfectly into the game. i think valve should seriously consider the addition of a russian class.

dod is based on the european theatre of ww2.If you are talking about DoD 1.3, then maybe yes. If you are talking DoD:S, then this is not correct. DoD:S is based off of the Western Front, according to Valve. I don't have the exact quote from them, but issues such as maps, models, and weapons have all been requested from other nationalities, and so far there is no information that looks as though there will be.

Not that I am opposed to these skins, or maps on the eastern front, or any other custom content, I love it. Just don't get your hopes up for any official releases from Valve.

ah i didnt know that valve decided to stick to the western front. also you should know that dod and dods share the same maps so they cant be either or. you are confusing european theatre with the eastern front(read what i said again). you see i figured dod was based on all of the european theatre (which encompasses both the western and eastern fronts), so i thought it was logical to add stuff from the east (like the russians).

ah i didnt know that valve decided to stick to the western front. also you should know that dod and dods share the same maps so they cant be either or.That's the funny thing about Valve's idea of DoD:Source. It's not a port of DoD 1.3 they say, but some maps are the same as 1.3 maps, of course slightly varied.

If it wasn't intended to be a port, why use the same map names? That's what confuses me. I did mistakingly take your words out of context, and reading you post again makes sense. Sorry about that. I jwas trying to give you a heads up about the updates, they probably won't happen. It will be up to the custom community for DoD:S's survival.

There was talk of embedding custom skins into the custom maps (such as winter skins on winter maps), but there has been no definitive data to support such an idea. There is some pretty crazy stuff capable, it's just figuring out how to apply all the available options is the hard part. I would personally love it if this was done, because it would really open the door for DoD:S.

Even 1.3 is based on the western front if I recall correctly.

Yes this is what I am hoping to be able to do with Tam's russian player models and dod_stalingrad, but as yet I haven't managed to find out how. If anyone has more information on the possibilities of this please let me know!

For now I`m working on only W_models of weapon. Shpagin PPSH-41 and Degtyarev DP-27 already done.
Mosin m1891\30 and Tokarev SVT-40 - work in progress.

But, I think, I must make a separate topic about my soviet pack. ;)

Now take a look on screen of the T-34 for Stalingrad map.
