DoD1.3 rmf's

It would be nice if Valve released the rmf's from their maps in 1.3.
The community would have a field day with making custom versions of the originals.

Any fool could rip them, but they would most likely be full of errors and nothing like the originals.

So, why not Valve?

well I can't answer that question, but there is no point in asking it. you know that the .rmf's will not be released. ever.
that having said, you can decompile dod 1.3 maps.. but it does take a lot of work. I wanted to see how some of dod's maps were made and I found out that they contain some incredibly complex brushwork (in comparison to CS 1.6 maps, for example). and complex brushwork gives headaches to decompilers. but if you're determined in porting a dod 1.3 map to dod:s, you should be able to do it.

This would be interesting if they did. Seeing how certain things were done plus for those of us who would like to create modified versions of some of the stock maps.

John Romero released all the source files for Quake last october so you never know. Maybe valve will be generous when a game gets it's 10th birthday or something lol.

Check it out here :

Does Valve actually own the maps? I thought most of the 1.3 maps were created by private mappers. Not Valve. Does a private mapper have to give up ownership of the map if Valve includes it in a release? And what about the old 3.1b maps?

Just curious...

^^ yes Valve owns every pixel of DoD for HL1, including maps, models, textures, everything.

Considering the amount of people who still loyally play dod 1.3, Id sincerely doubt Valve would "OFFICIALLY" release the rmf's. Theres probably a hack job of all of them anyways by now.

Your better off downloading HLBSP (Half-Life BSP) and opening up a DoD map to check out how it was made than decompiling, which will split brushes into about 4 to 8 chuncks each.

When you think about it though, if your straight up trying to port a map, it'd be better to have it open and remake it from scratch just by flying around in spectator mode considering all the small technical details with entities and 100% re-texturing you'd have to do.

Not to mention the proper scaling issues. UGG, thatd be a very boring, time consuming job for the 12 people who will play it on a empty public custom map server.
