Strap on those khakis and lace up those jack boots! I was so anxious to see how this one does on the pubs that I decided to release the first public version just in time for Christmas :D

It's a 3 objective detonation map with the Wehrmacht on the defensive inside a walled city in central Tunisia. It is 32 player compatible and the performance should be right on par.

Some quick pics:

http://www.jparlay.com/images/tun_b4_small5.jpg
http://www.jparlay.com/images/tun_b4_small6.jpg

Changes since b2 (playtest version):

Improved optimization
Reduced filesize and collision load
complete clipping of out-of-bounds areas (i hope)
custom icons
extended an additional route to the radio tower
re-built german spawn area for better protection and PVS
some more detailing, smoothing, odds and ends (lots still to come)

Here's the download:

(22.5 mb) .rar (http://www.jparlay.com/files/dod_tunisia_b4.rar)

Enjoy, distribute, merry christmas et al... Here's hoping the bug reports are few and action is tight! Thanks dod-federation, thanks dod.net :D

Well a buddy and I went though it looking for bugs and stuff, here is our findings...

In this first screenshot you can jump from the car to the ledge and then move either left or right along it around the building, good spot for a mg.
HERE (http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/6733/dodtunisiab40002al2.jpg)

In this one you can jump on the boxes then go behind them but can't get out.
HERE (http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/8084/dodtunisiab40000zo9.jpg)

This one just shows a lighting error...
HERE (http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/2038/dodtunisiab40004bt6.jpg)

In this last one you can walk through the door and get behind the wall and kill people.
The door (http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/3164/dodtunisiab40001po5.jpg)
The view from inside (http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/1526/dodtunisiab40003fm2.jpg)

Thats all we really found, pretty short list ;p
My buddy would crash every time I planted the bomb though which I think was just my server, we'll see when we play it on our 32 man server.

Other than that, very nice work, great FPS and look.

yeah, i was worried about the custom icons crashing it since its a det map ... thanks rommel.

What if the icons weren't packed into the bsp, would it still crash? Those are some really nice icons.

The world doesn't revolve around a packed BSP after all...

I made a res file if you decide to do that...
"resources"
{
"materials/sprites/obj_icons/icon_obj_mydump.vmt" "file"
"materials/sprites/obj_icons/icon_obj_mydump.vtf" "file"

I think that he posted somewhere else that he fixed the custom icon issue, and that they will remain. Yes, they are nice icons.

All the ladders need work, they are hard to get on at times which ends up getting one killed.

Looks very nice - will try it this week on WQ1 Server ;)

Added also MIRROR (http://uploads.hell.or.at/download.php?file=2f8d5718a36984f245d47c3bc4ec45b6 )

the back wall of the little building with the grate you blow up sticks out further than the foundation.

the ladders do need work.

other than that, ONE OF THE VERY VERY BEST CUSTOMS TO DATE. seriously, im impressed at how unique AND balanced AND fun this thing is. Theyre gonna have to start buying custom maps for this game... Jagd needs an official african brother.

JakeParlay

aww thanks guys, warms a guys heart to hear that. the mirrors are much appreciated as well.

can anyone confirm if its just the ladders leading up from the underground or all the ladders in general?

@mcjewels - ya I was aiming for kind of an overhang look there ... you dont like? :D

so far, i'm looking at re-working the ladders, a few easy fixes on window panes, and rethinking the allied spawn area to make the entrance into the playable area less 'campable.' Might also widen out the Axis spawn for a little more elbow room in there. Cheers for all the support... it was a big sigh of relief to hear that the gameplay seems to be working out, and above all, it seems like a blast.

So far it seems to me that it is the ones leading up from the underground, that I have noticed anyways....

Also in that building by the radio tower the holes could be a little bigger so you don't have to crouch and fine tune your way down them while a camper is blowing your brains to bits.

The ladder brushes kinda make it difficult under fire.

Can you make us a flag cap one for Vicotry in Europe (VIE)?

Or can I remove the det and convert it to a flag cap map?

Thanks. Great map.

Ive noticed that models that arent in direct light, or are in dim light, get too dark. Since this entire map is a little bit dark, the problem its probably making the models too dark.

could the entire map be too dark to use info_lightings effectively?

model lighting is one of my biggest complaints about mapping in source.

JakeParlay

I'll have a look at the tiger and other models, but its tough to gauge that sort of thing -- everyone's settings are different.

@ frank the tank: yes, surprisingly a fair amount of guys asked about that, and I am curious myself to see how it could do, so i will make such a version. youre my boy blue

this map looks great. Have not had a chance to play it yet.

reminds me a bit of the old maps dod_crete and dod_casablanca.

Maybe some flag points would be on second stories of some of the buildings...or by radios or other such objects.

the map is awesome, but what is kind of peculiar is that you're using so much css content..

dod_crete was made by a 907th member back then and you had a place in the map, where you could jump on the top of a tent and end up in a outside swimming pool. He used the teleport function. We had many 907th pool party lol.

we now have many mappers in 907th doing great map in very different style and often trying to inovate in different environement then the classic dod map.

Great map Jake!
