[WIP] dod_tunisia

I started a dod 'afrika' map last spring, but it remained on the back burner for too long and I wasn't thrilled with the brushwork when I loaded it up recently. So about a month ago I decided to scap it and start with a clean slate. The rough layout, general lighting and optimization are all done. I am now in the midst of packaging it all up and begin the gauntlet of beta testing over at dod federation. :D I'm excited. It's probably the closest I've ever come to following the FD 'gameplay first' rule, and I really hope it'll play well.

Anyhow, the basic premise is that a few German companies have moved into an old walled city in Tunisia, perhaps within 100 km of the famed Kasserine Pass. It will be an objective map, and the Allies are charged with breaching the city and blowing an ammo dump, radio tower, and an underground prison entrance.

Onto some screens:

Plenty of detailing left to do, but I'm going to hold off until after the testing. I don't want to get too far ahead of myself in case there needs to be some structural changes. *keeps fingers crossed*

Been meaning to respond to your other thread on dod fed, sorry I've not yet. The map exteriors look really great.

I know this may sound sacrilegious, but try not to worry so much about gameplay - get template detailed areas that you can move around at will. Theres no point in holding one arm behind your back.

The BEST of luck :D

Very cool... It'll be very refreshing to see the Dod folks running around a map like this. I'm sure if it gets a following we'll start to see some appropriate player skins.

Looking forward to release. :)

Nice to see an original map. We need more of these. Re-makes don't show talent.

Let's keep it civil FMPONE, you and I both know you are better than that. This isn't an offensive comment, but it really is begging for a more abrupt one from New_b.

Looking nice, reminds me of a couple of maps from the original soldier of fortune. Can't see much wrong other than it looks a little too clean/crisp around the edges, but that will change with detailing i'm sure, and a small point but the texture cut off on the wall and the sticky-out-bits here http://www.jparlay.com/images/dod_tunisiab1_3.jpg on the left. Otherwise beautiful as ever.

We had a playtest on tunisia this past weekend with the help of dod-federation... managed to get 25 folks there on a Saturday eve... pretty thrilling. Anyhow, the playtest went well -- gameplay seemed to have worked out great, it was a ton of fun and a ton of chaos. FPS started to tank a bit in the middle courtyard, but then again we crammed it with 25 people and had everyone open fire at once :)

So the past week I've optimized further... it needed a bit more hinting and I was being too optimistic about having normal maps everywhere, so a lot of them went out the window... also have been re-working some of the aesthetics a bit.

Okay, enough chatter, onto some new screens. One or two shots may seem quite similar to prior shots, I kinda wanted to show changes for anyone curious:

Thanks to all who came for the test, it was a blast. I am debating whether to ask for another playtest, or just push this thing out the door as a beta release.

The map looks fantastic, can't wait for public release! I just hope it's not a huge DL, that's a server killer usually even with Bzip+DLurl.

thanks  . the playtest version tipped the scales at 41 mb compressed in a rar. i've hacked away about 10-12 megs of the custom content since then, so I'm guessing the first pub release should be about 34-36 mb all zipped up, maybe 30 meg bz2'ed

been working on dod_tunisia a bit this week to bring it up to rc1. fixed up some nagging stuff from b4, and re-did the custom skybox for the map. the lighting from the last sky didnt fit anymore, so I re-did it. I'm pretty happy with it, but opinions are always welcome.

Looks great Jake. I think otF already pointed out that it was really "clean/crisp" looking. The detail is amazing! Just scuff it up a bit. Just my opinion. Make it look like it is in a desert. Like years of wind and sand has been hitting it.

Can't wait for the CTF version, I would love to implement it into the ViE map pool.
