Does anyone know how to make transparent player icons, so it only shows the shape of the image and not the circle or square?

For example...

How did the creator make it so you can only see the image?

What I am trying to do is make the 5th Ranger diamond for the allies player icon.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You use a Alpha channel in the VTF file.

In PhotoShop, the Gimp or Paint.Net you can add a special channel.

http://www.hl2world.com/wiki/index.php/Alpha_Channel_Textures

When add the Alpha channel, in the case if a player icon, you would make sure the shield is seen by making the area you want seen... white or a shade of grey.

The areas not seen are to be black....

Not Transparent .................................................. Completely invisible
WHITE>>>>>>>>>>>>>Grey Shades>>>>>>>>>>>>>BLACK

If you are lucky enough to have Photoshop 7 and up you can use the VTF Plug-in (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Photoshop_VTF_Plugin).

The Gimp or Paint.Net you will have to use VTFEdit. (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/VTFEdit)

Thanks a lot man!

But I have another question...

Is there any way I can flatten out the diamond? Make it look more like a diamond then stretched at top? I used 128x64 for the image. Why is it stretched?

You should be using a square image, for the simple Diamond 64x64 will be plenty but try 128 x 128 too.

If you already have a image with a Alpha Channel in it, just resize :D
