As some of you may know i am working on a beach map for dod:s called WN71 and i still have yet to release the final version of my village map, dod_fuhrung which still needs some game play balancing

What i want to know is what kind of map you guys would like to see next, i plan to do another original map after WN71 then do a remake of caen after that

I was thinking of doing a village snow map with a much different setting and layout than the current crop or maybe even a swampland map revolving around the para drops into normandy

Anyway, post the type of setting you would like to see in my next map, examples are helpful, gimme some ideas !

First of all, thank you for being such a dedicated mapper!

Personally, I would really like to see a more urbanized theme - more of a big city feeling. I've yet to find a fantastic Berlin map, if there are any (please tell me if there are), so something like that would give a new feel to the already fantastic DoD: S world.

Would love to hear your thoughts on it! And, good mapping:D

new gameplay type. new concepts. unusual layouts, different flag setup. 5 flags or another linear is lame.
to give an example of a usual map and the flag setup:
F--F--F--F--F
('F' is a flag, '-' represents a certain distance).

here's another:

:-:

(the dots and the '-' are flags)

to make it clear: don't make another map with the above layouts :).

Actually, doing the Caen remake first would be REALLY nice. Next original map later =P :)

I think dod_churchyard_b5 is a good example of a map with a nice mix of village/houses and countryside. There have been so many "buildings-only" maps made, that when you get to move amongst trees, hedges and grass it feels like something completely new.

It should be nice when valve finally adds that render to texture technology it has been talking about, where the far clip lane is rendered as a 2d object, this will allow for a lot more open maps with large play areas

I will most likely make my own folage models/textures if i were to do a marshland map

after hl2:ep2 comes out, outdoor maps will be much better optimized, longer viewing distances won't kill fps as much. i'd recommend waiting until that happens, but who knows, it might be very simple to just edit/update a map to take advantage of the new standards..

The logistics of the whole thing would be tough to get your head around but I always wanted to see someone do a detonation map that takes place on a moving German supply train. Maybe a bit too ambitious given the engine and models that are available.

At the very least it would be completely original to DoD.

your next project should be to finish the 3rd person weapon models and objects with phong shading like you said you were going to. :p

Meleeme if you want a detonation map that is set on a German supply train the closest thing you will get to it at the moment in dod is to download my dod_plextrains map which was released last week.

Have a look on the release section for the download link ;)

How about a snow forest "Battle of the Bulge" type of map, that would be so cool.

whatever it is, it will be well worth the download.

Make a version of the final battle in Kelly's Heroes. I've always wanted a version of that scene to be created.

With all these suggestions things look promising no matter what path the author takes. :)

I would have to suggest, that after the map maker sifts through all these ideas, that he create a poll himself based on what project ideas he likes. The forumer's can then vote on which they would rather have him do.

Call me excessive compulsive, but it just sounds like a logical step to me.

What about a migration of dod_forest to dods?

I loved the map at dod 1.3 and it's good for huge servers - and look at the name of my Server - it would fit perfect :D

Some will curse me for this......

LEGOLAND!!!

okay, just kidding, just warming you up for

CAEN

It's just not DOD without the longest running official DOD map ever (from Beta 1 up until Source) Yes we know the British were in Caen not American, just rename it.

Okay you say you don't want to re-hash old ground - How about a ambient change then, something a little more spooky and colorful, a brightly lit nightime map with a hint of Castle Wolfenstein in it (remember dod_festung?)

Last but not least, if you really want to stick to historical, want a snow map to show off your latest FX creation, try doing a Battle of the Bulge map, Bastonge or any one of the outlying smaller towns. I was goning to mention an assault on one of the many heavily guarded secret underground labs, but that would require too many custom textures and models.

Whether Caen or Bastogne, I've heard at least 5 times for each that a mapper had plans/was working on it/soon had screenshots to post/etc etc. Nothing so far. Both maps are becoming internet myths

If you go to our site (URL in sig), click "History", scroll down to the "Ardennes-Alsac -- Battle of the Bulge" section, and click the link that describes a Medal of Honor citation given out in that battle. It's a pretty cool story and the setting sounded like a good combo of a rural/village winter scene.

This isn't a thread hijack attempt, btw...just thought some of you might find this to be interesting reading. :)
