dod_aura WIP

Hey guys
Okay, I finally decided to post a WIP thread for this map
The main reason is that I need some motivation to keep me going
Its almost done, but below, Ill list what needs to be completed

-Allies' Spawn
-3d skybox
-Prop detailing

Doesnt seem like a lot when I put it like that.
You will see what I mean by prop detailing. Ive been doing mostly brushwork first. A lot of the areas are not that detailed yet, and require some work.
The map has gone through a crap load of lighting changes.

I didnt take any pictures of the middle area, b/c its a little too dull right now. However, it consists of a dual bridge, and opposing open buildings on each side. It should be really a really fun and challenging area.

Also, I am open to name changes. I am not 100% stuck on Aura. I picked a name with an A bases on the theory the maps that start with an A get most publicity (Anzio, Avalanche, and one if the the most popular custom map Anvil), but I am open to anything, hopefully something more WW2 based.

Well all I can say is if it was my map I would put one of those screenshots up as my wallpaper, it would be all the motivation I would need.

Can't give up on this one mate from the look of the screenshots you have put in far too many hours making it look this nice to give up now :D

Looks good, and I especially like the grass (as odd as that sounds). They don't look like stock models...are they custom?

The only complaint that comes to mind so far is that I think we're all tired of the small Norman village-type maps. However, the atmosphere is quite nice.

Neutrino, what you should really do is go to dod-federation.com, arrange for a playtest and we'll all tell you what needs to be done based on the gameplay. You've shown us time and again you have more than enough creativity for your own maps, but I'd hate to give you pointers only for you to have to redo everything later down the road because it doesn't play out well.

well, the reason i decided to do a village of this style was because I never did one before (even back in the gold days)
paysage doesnt really fall under this category
but I hope there are some suprises, and thats its not all something youve seen before.

ill for sure schedule a playtest, but i need to finish the one spawn first. and plus, i believe i still have to empty two buildings, which are currently filled in solid.

The map looks absolutely fantasic, man. I love the atmosphere. It's very colorless (not meaning it lacks color, but it isn't like the original four stock maps), which makes it looks so beautiful. I can see wallpapers created from this map already!

As for 3d skybox, I don't know how hard it would be, but how about like hills with lots of trees on one side and another city/town in the distance?

That's what I was thinking. Awesome quality... it's very bleak. I didn't realize Neutrino was such a good mapper!

The grass is awesome too...

...really though... playtest as soon as possible. Gamplay firsssst.

Haha, FMPONE.

Anemia is awesome, it really is... I really think it's just the middle that's too big because it becomes very difficult to get past it and appreciate the rest.

Oh, and don't respond to that because we're hijacking the thread.

Aura looks awesome; keep us up to date, Neutrino. :cool:

here are 3 more shots

in the first one, I just added half of the props
the second shot is the dual bridges. the two buildings on each side will be opened up. any other suggestions, mainly for details?
the third shot is one spawn exit for the allies. the german/axis based props will need to be changed

so i guess this thread has already helped a little bit, and those comments are for sure. thanks!

I did notice one small thing in one of your pictures. One of the crates had a gap between it and the crate it was supposed to be sitting on.

i did some good progress today. nothing really worthy of pictures, but i think this thread was a great idea. reading the replies each day does motivate me, and ill put in a solid 30 minutes right away after reading. before i start the one remaining spawn, I need to open up another building, as well as detail its surroundings. once I do that, Im in pretty good shape. im thinking of using the conrete bunker used in dod_colmar somewhere in the axis spawn, but expand on it as well.

im 99% sure where the flag placement will be, but I do have other possibilties, which I may suggest during playtests and such

I also have a suprise, which will please the old DOD beta players :) come time for release

im so sorry guys. ive been extremely busy with my new job. ive been working 6 hours a day, plus 5 hours of school a day. and then weekends are usually loaded too. im looking forward to any free time to work on the map

Your map looks absolutely amazing. Great Job, it will definately be put on my clans server rotation when finished.

By the way, what is that skybox you are using? Is it custom or am i just blind and for some reason think i havent seen it before. I need something like that for my Juno Beach map i am making.

its a public custom sky box which i download and edited. however, im pretty sure it was a night sky box. what i did was changed it to my liking. brightened it, changed the colours, saturated, blured...ect to get the effect i wanted.
the original author said he would allow changes, so its all good

btw, JUNO beach map. hells yah :)
keep me posted for sure. that would have been one of my future projects. (Future future...)

Yeah, i will post screenshots, when I get a lot done. Right now I just got the beach going and the beach house(first allied objective). So once I get atleast 50% of the map done, I will post screenshots.

But not to steal your thunder. But If you dont mind, when you release your map, I may have to use your skybox :)

The roof look wery flat in some shots maybe you should displace
some of them a little.
And I think in some shots it looks like the road is a bit overgrown with grass, not so realistic maybe. But hey, its sweet looking! :)

I agree that the grass looks more realistic. Plants are intense in small towns, especially ones that get alot of water.

jesus...finally ive picked this project back up with more dedication than usual. the next two days I have off work. so what I plan to accomplish in this time is to fully detail the map. then come my next break, ill do the 3d skybox and eventually work on performance (which shouldnt be hard)
