M712 / C96 reskin

Ahaha, thought I forgot about you all, didn't you?

It's your uncle Wile back with another skin. Truth be told, I was holding off skinning to wait until I was able to upgrade my video card to something that can get phongy. But, life being what it is, and Wile suddenly being unemployed, well food and bills come first ;) The good news for you is that Wile suddenly has some spare time on his hands and gets bored and starts to tinker with Photoshop again.

Well it turns out Wile didn't know something (yes, I was shocked too). Apparently the C96 Mauser was never made into full-auto. Instead, in 1932 Mauser re-worked the design into the select-fire M712. Sooooo.... The weapon you see in DOD:S is actually an M712, not a C96 as advertised (that's it! I want my money back!)

So here we have one VERY hi-detailed skin. I spent way too much of my life today on this. Got carried away and then suddenly it's 0330hrs and I'm sitting here typing this. Holy crap I really got obsessive this time, I even added in details that you will probably not see in-game. I even resorted to forced-perspective skinning to make up for parts of the weapon that were not modelled. Why? Because apparently I'm insane. As with many of my skins, I used the default as the base and went from there. No phong - maybe when I have a better card - I just don't trust doing it blind and I don't trust anyone to do it for me if I can't check their work.

This isn't gonna be to everyone's liking, I made it look like an older, well-used weapon. Ya gotta figure it's been used by the German soldiers for over 10 years so it's seen use and a couple of refurbishings. Not for the guys and gals who like shiny new weapons ;)

Nice picture of details you probably will never see in-game

Holy crap when you said you went crazy on the detail, BOY DID YOU. It looks great in game though. Thanks. We should set up a New Vid card fund for you. Sorry about the job thing.

Very nice Wile!

I wish I could motivate myself enough to start skinning again

Out of nowhere, another Wile E Coyote skin appears! Looks old and nasty. Perfect.

I am disappointed about your decision not to include a world model skin. Can we expect one at a later date?

That looks like real metal! Awesome skin, Wile.

I had started on the world model and sueddenly realized that that on that tiny pistol you would hardly notice the changes since it is basically the same color except for the bolt and trigger group, which are only really visible from the top and rear. Maybe later. I was tired :D

Anyway someone asked this awhile back...

Here is the difference between hi-res and lo-res. I must admit my screen is at 1024x768 - at larger resolutions the extra detail may come out more. But for me unless you get real close (i.e. ironsight mode) the extra resolution is wasted. Still that's what they want, so that's what they get :)
I never was found of the default for this weapon (forgive me [DoD]Agent~0)

Its not the details on the world model I'm really after. Its more having the metal and wood match. I feel it looks odd to have the world model take on a different colour tone to the view model, even if the differences are minimal. A weapons release feels imcomplete without a world model.

Hows the MG42 and K98 you had going doing?

I can't tell the difference between the high res and the low res. Does it come into play when your monitor settings are higher. I have my game set at 1280x1024.

Just got done deleting everything of mine from that website.
What's wrong with fpsbanana? Are they kidnapping little children or something?

ahhh, sorry, I should have never mentioned it. I was pissed off and had a few beers earlier. I do not ususally trash talk other sites on this site. Bad manners.

I am in discussion right now with a moderator from that website to hopefully resolve what I perceive to be a glaring problem with the way submissions are reviewed.

But to answer your question, I don't think just "anyone" should have the ability to disapprove (and therefore limit visibility) all your submissions just on the basis that you didn't "credit Valve". Especially when there are about 3000 submissions on that same site that don't credit valve.

That's why I ususally stick to moderated forums such as this one :)

Well done as always. I have all of your skins since you seem to be the only one doing away with normal maps and using alpha maps. No world model makes this gun feel incomplete since all of your other releases have one. Perhaps you could make a tutorial on skinning? Something simple? :)
