dod_railroad2_b2 and dod_harrington were very good customs. although, you're better off playing a bunch and picking some, as you'll get many answers as different people like different maps.

dod_hobofire was my absolute favorite, hasn't done so well on source though I'm sad to say.

lies ... dod_carta was better ... oh, it wasn't a real place though :(

So you are asking for the best custom map that was based on a real place then?

If so, do you mean just the name or the actual layout of the map?

would zafod come under custom maps as it was released in the betas and still worked after dod went retail?

if so then zafod.

if it's totally custom and not released with any version of day of defeat then i guess i'd have to say that dod_advance is at the top of my favs list.

**edit**

sorry just saw your edit regarding it being an actual place in WWII history.
