Problems starting SDK

Hi guys,

Ran into a weird problem today. I fired up steam, and went to start up SDK, and nothing happened. I get the running hour glass, but no SDK.

I deleted all the SDK stuff, and reinstalled it. Same outcome.

I navigated to the SourceSDK Bin folder, and double clicked SDKLauncher directly, and i got the following error message:

"This application has failed to start because Steam.dll was not found. Re-Installing the application may fix this problem."

Obviously, my steam folder is somewhere around 20gb and I'd rather not have to re-install all of it.

Anyone have any ideas? I searched the Steam help forums, with no luck.

I also deleted the ClientRegistry.blob already with no luck either.

As always, thanks in advance for your wisdom!

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SDK_workaround

This may or may not be the solution to your problem but its worth a shot. I seem to be one of the few that hasnt had any major problems with the SDK after the last update besides the model compiler and 3d view in hammer. I found a work around for both, the one for hammer is on that same page.

neither worked.

I find this weird, but for some reason i don't have a hammer.exe in that folder...

anyone else?

Im going crazy because i have been working on my latest map for the last 3 days straight...

just a silly question, doc, but when was the last time you defragged?

hey moe,

I last defragged my machine saturday. I checked the fragmentation level this afternoon, and it was still at 0%.

I also defragged SDK through the steam client, but it said it was also 0%

I try and defrag my machine anytime it gets to 10% :)

well i cured it.

All i had to do was delete my entire steam folder, and let everything download again overnight :)

Thanks to those who posted.

ooo.

For future reference, doc, you do know you can backup all your gcf's, right?
Also, I back up my dods:\dod\maps, materials, sounds, etc folders as well.

Well, glad you got it cured, sorry it was inconvenient.

Hey Moe,

Yeah i knew I could back those up, but I wasn't sure what the problem was, so I figured i go for the clean install :-)

I made sure to back up all my custom textures / models, etc, so really it was only d/l all the games again, and then spending a little while today putting everything back together.

As for convenience, there are definitly worse things out there :-)

I appreciate the support though

Yikes!

Ive been thinking about re-installing steam and all my games lately myself. I figure if I got rid of all the games/custom stuff that I dont play I could free up a pretty large chunk of HD space. Glad you got it settled anyway.
