Which countries are viable settings?

Hi all.

I'm looking for a site that gives me an easy overview of which European countries saw US vs. Germans action.

Why? Well, it would be quite silly to make, say, a map set in Norway if Norway never saw any US troop fighting (please excuse any ignorance on my behalf) :)

So long as there absolutely no follow up questions, Australia.

If there are, just look to movies for inspiration.

Yeah Darwin in Australia got hit during WWII but it was by the Japanese (not the germans), basically they bombed us !!!!

Anyway, if you chose this as a location you could make it like a beach'ish (objective based) kind of map, have it as the Allies defending and Axis attacking, put plenty of mangroves in it and have someone make a model of a Crocodile that bites!! LOL and dingo's that steal your weapons

Don't forget Africa thats where the ground war with germany, and us began. There were several fights for cities in North Africa that have never been mapped.

I would look up some ww2 book at the library. one with lots of pictures that gives you a decent timeline and the forces involved. I have too mnay to ist at home...and would really give you some ideas for maps.

I also have a book on allied deception during ww2. Whats neat is that you could use one of the fictious operations as a context for a battle or map. some of them did have diversionary units involved. Like small commando raids to bmake it seem as if a larger assualt was coming....so you could have a map that was not necissarily in a country that saw those forces in conflict.

Sweet it is about time someone started mapping that part of the war. Most don't even know that we fought the Germans in Northern Africa all the way to Egypt. Although to make it completely accurate there would be no STG44 no Mg42, and from what I have read no garands. They were using unscoped springfields still. The germans were using the MG34 at the time, and the MP28 MP38, and some of the actual K98s before they shortened them, and made them into the model that is used in DOD:S, but it doesn't need to be historically accurate just a good ole gameplay in the Sahara.

We as in... allies in general? I know it was mostly Commonwealth forces in Egypt/Syria and a mix of Americans and Commonwealth from Morocco/Algeria moving eastward... both moved inward toward Tunisia and forced the defeat of Germany and Italy in Africa.

If we're trying to be historically accurate, since we only have Americans in DoD we'd have to focus on the battles fought primarily in Tunisia and westward... but considering all the guns mentioned in your post I suppose full historic accuracy is already out the window on that one, so whatever goes I guess.

This link talks about all Allied action from an operational perspective in North Africa. It doesn't really go into the battles, but it will give you a lot of names of towns, and areas that were fought over, and by who. It doesn't really get into the ground war until later in 1941. This may give you a point of reference to go off of to find more info. If they had Brit player models El Alamein would be a great town to map.

Wikipedia is always a great resource for this stuff too...

I was thinking of possibly mapping something for the Battle of the Kasserine Pass, but I'm still thinking about how I'd do it.

Australia was attacked by Germans, or at least our ships were in our waters.

The HMAS Sydney was sunk off the coast of Geraldton by the German ship the Kormarant. It is believe the Kormarant passed through Perth waters when the radio station at Rottnest island was unable to contact an unknown vessel on the night before the battle. But the ship disappeared fast and was thought to be a ghost.

It would have been very interesting though if they caught on to it being a German vessel, Perth was surrounded with guns but they lacked range.

Maybe as an idea for a map, not realistic but, have a "pirate" like map, a ship to ship boarding?
