Zbrush.

http://www.pixologic.com

Tools:

1. Fiber Brush - Create hair texture and surfaces.. Grass, fibers, hay, etc.
2. Bump Brush. - Bumpiness
3. Hue/Saturation/Brightness/etc Adjuster brushes,
4. PolyMesh Brush - You can have a 3d object like some debris or piece of rock and spray them everywhere. Spray chunkers of rock and debris and dust everywhere.
5. Snake Hook/Hook brushes. - You can make leaves and tendrils and branches with this. Vines, etc.
6. AND MANY MORE!

What's so good bout this program?
Everything that you paint with in the Zbrush environment has depth, lighting and material!! In some cases, it even has full 3d information! Spray your rocks, debris and whatever elements to create a highly realistic texture. Use the rendering engine to render thick bushes consisting of tons of 3d constructued vegeatation sparyed everwhere with deep within shadows to create a beautiful treeline that can be post-processed with photoshop. Apply Fibre. Make the surface bumpy with the bump brush. Make things rougher or smoother as you wish. Splash and paint over noise. Engrave patterns, Extrude, etc etc. You can do almost ANYTHING!

P.S. This is the best graphic creation program in the world.

And it can even be used for modelling stuff. It's so darn easy to model with this program.

The next version i heard got animation features. Though this program isn't really meant for texture-making, it is pretty good for using it to create a base texture first for most users.

Time to extract normal maps out of this Zbrush generated texture (using the higher res version that is...), with a click of a button!

You can look for a BUMP map to Normal map converter though, to convert a normal grayscale bump map (<- which can be painted easily) to a Normal map (which is impossible to paint).

Ricochet originally posted this on blending textures in source:

1. Take the 2 textures you want to blend and convert them from .tga zo vtf using vtex. Lets call them "tex1.vtf" and "tex2.vtf".

2. Create a text file containing the following lines:

"WorldVertexTransition"
{
"$basetexture" "tex1"
"$basetexture2" "tex2"
}

3. Save this file as "blendtex1tex2.vmt" for example

4. Copy all the files into your "materials" directory

That should be all. Just a few notes:

- If you want the material to have specific properties, for example dirt, insert the line

"$surfaceprop" "dirt"

in the vmt.

- By default, Hammer will display the first texture in the texture browser. If you want something different, like the usual diagonally blended texture, then you have to draw that yourself, convert it to vtf and insert the line

"%tooltexture" "tex1tex2tooltexture"

in the vmt.

- Of course, if the vtf's are in a subdirectory, you have to specifiy them, for example:

"$basetexture" "dwins_texs/tex1"
"$basetexture2" "dwins_texs/tex2"

Hope I didn't make any typos....

edit: I've got a set of example textures for texture blending lying around. tgas, vmts, tooltexture etc. I can mail em to you, if you're still having trouble.
