i wonder if someone could give me some help...

im working on the map brit_controlled_town
for 4.0

i wonder does anyone have any pre-made buildings? or know where i can get any...
churches, nice car models, houses, pointy walls, just nicely done things as im still learning.

We mappers use our own creativity & skills to create what we want. Sure, prefabs of say planes and tanks are acceptable... but not reccomended. If you don't have the skills right now, I would say you work on that. Especially if you can't build a house.

ender pretty much nailed it.

Skill is achieved by making houses, not putting prefabs into your map. :D

I started mapping by recreating obects around me
eg my garden shed
I think thats quite a good place to start off.
Once you have mastered sheds and the like.
You could try a simple version of your own home that also gives you a nice idea of proportions of rooms, heights of doorways, and a nice grounding in architecture at the same time.

Just experiment its a great way to learn

I did the same when I first started mapping. Learn how to get the scale right and create things from pictures or your own visits to places. Then after you get the hang of designing, you can start making an online map to release.

ok i appreciate the comments, ive made a map for PCK, and ive made a map for DoD but never released as i had compile problems, its just im crap with detailed housing. but i appreciate the comments, this is what ive got so far.

im basiclay using various areas around my town to create this map, i was just wondering if there was any prefab buildings to use as a guide, not to put in the map, jsut to see how they are textured and constructed.

ive made little thatch huts and stuff before, but i wanted advice on a full blown 3 story interior.

Most prefabs I've seen have major problems, they are poorly construced and will give newbie mappers the wrong ideas about how a building should be put together.

ok thanks :D, however i would like some help on how to put map models into maps, prime example cars and sangbags.
how do i know how high i have to put them above the ground?

ALSO!

how do i create an attack / defend map? because theres 3 places i want the axis to have to capture, but i want them to start as the british defending. NEXT, do the teams HAVE to swap sides or can i make it so only the allies defend and ONLY the axis attack!?

btw thank you all i REALLY appreciate all this help.

When I first started mapping, I too had trouble with creative looking architecture. I suggest, you open up some dod maps and see what type of stuff they did and how they change with each scenario.

Keep in mind, your map can't be full of "open" buildings. Most mappers put brush/or brushes together and slap a texture on it. I do that for most of the main layout and then "open up" the houses I think will be key points in the map and add to gameplay.

Yeah, I just suggest a lot of practice/work with hammer and getting used to it, and yes, ender has a good idea there. I know thats what I did to an extent. Just check out the more popular maps and see how their architecture is and buildings, textures, stuff like that.

you can make it so only one side defends. i.e. overlord where the axis only defend.

that church looks good.

why don't u use your skills on building houses there....

if you are too lazy about building houses then mapping is not the right thing to do......

@ DwW
I like your dry stane dyke

a good interesting feature to add to buildings is bay windows
and curved roads and angled junctions it makes the streets seem far more authentic
and doesn't take too much more time

er.. dragon, if u read what i typed which u clearly didnt i stated i never planned to use the houses in my map, i wanted to see the best way to construct one.. it has nothing to do with lazyness, i just asked for examples to see how better mappers do it, as thats the only way to learn.

please read before posting. you only appear ignorant.

thank you for your comments gozza its fully appreciated.

also thank you techn9ne i shoulda realised the beach maps :D

The main thing when making buildings is scale . . . i have seen way to many maps that have objects that are way over scale and it takes alot away from the map

If you want to ask questions then ask and i will answer what i can for you

I might start a tutorial thread here soon :)

ill delete this thread soon as ive not put a WIP thread up FULL of progress pics. but il leave this open so u guys know that its being continued else where, then ill remove this thread.

well as my WIP thread has been closed because i posted Hammer pics *rollseyes* ill revert to this one.

because aparently because ive posted hamemr shots my map will never get finished.

well it will, and i hope this will be left open. and ill come back with some IN-GAME screen!

id say now its about 30% done

because ive had my other thread closed i now have to ask this HERE,

when i compile and try and run it it says something like AllocBlock: Full or something similar, wtf is it doing?

I would suggest reading the mapping FAQ on this forum (sticky near top) if you're new to mapping, because although there are some helpful vets around here, you won't be able to get every single question answered. I've discovered from experience that it's more time efficient to read the FAQ first and explore the tutorials it links to. Then, if your question has still not been answered, come here. You will be able to make a much more informed query and will have the knowledge base to do something about your problem once the suggestions for fixing it come back to you.
As for your last question, I have no idea what is causing the problem but maybe someone else will. But I can give you some suggestions.
First of all, since you are having compile problems, I would suggest that you make sure you are using Zoner's compile tools. There's a sticky thread about them, I think. All mappers use Zoner's tools instead of the default hammer tools. They give better error reports and come with an FAQ that might help you.
One more thing: if you have a question, you might as well give a detailed error report instead of just saying "it says something like AllocBlock: Full or something similar, wtf is it doing?" It will make answering your question a lot easier for those inclined to help.

cheers

ive been through the FAQs BcBoy and nowhere does it mention the error AllocBlock:Full. please don't patronize me. ive been around the forums since beta 1 but ive kept to skinning and sprite making and sound making. Ive done maps for PVK and for DoD before, but i never released any, and this is a totaly new error that has popped up, im learning and i am reading the tuts and i have read the FAQs.

04-28-2003, 03:49 PM
cool. I didn't mean to "patronize" you. You started a thread saying you were new to mapping ("im still learning") so I thought I could help. I'll just stop now.

The game gives an "AllocBlock:full" error and won't run the map
There is too much of something in your map for your PC to handle, and it has run out of memory. Try running CSG with the -chart parameter to see what might be overloading it- usual culprits are having too many entities in your map, or if the game is trying to draw too much for your PC to handle (e.g. if you have a leak)

i spoke with cheeto on MSN, and sent him the rmf, and he had a potter about and hes helped me, theres alot of complex shapes, curves and pats to curves pasted and pasted over with some leaks... so im gonna remove them, re-scale everything better and then push on. im looking for a release within 2 weeks of 4.0 release
