Map overviews

I guess this counts as a release..

For some maps that don't have a map pack, now you can have a map.

Just unrar this to your day of defeat source directory (the one that has the "dod" folder in it), it should line up right.
It even has .res files so if you unrar this to a server, anyone who connects gets the minmaps.

All of them in one rar (http://people.jupiterhosting.com/~phurley/files/dods-mappacks/rat-overviewpack1.rar)

Or if you just want individual ones:

dod_hkksinfiltration_d (http://people.jupiterhosting.com/~phurley/files/dods-overviews/dod_hkksinfiltration_d-overview.rar)
dod_hobofire_b1 (http://people.jupiterhosting.com/~phurley/files/dods-overviews/dod_hobofire_b1-overview.rar)
dod_hobofire (http://people.jupiterhosting.com/~phurley/files/dods-overviews/dod_hobofire-overview.rar)
dod_nmramelle_b1 (http://people.jupiterhosting.com/~phurley/files/dods-overviews/dod_nmramelle_b1-overview.rar)
dod_willage_b1 (http://people.jupiterhosting.com/~phurley/files/dods-overviews/dod_willage_b1-overview.rar)
dod_giza_b4 (http://people.jupiterhosting.com/~phurley/files/dods-overviews/dod_giza_b4-overview.rar)
dod_smallhill_rc1 (http://people.jupiterhosting.com/~phurley/files/dods-overviews/dod_smallhill_rc1-overview.rar)
dod_snow_battlefield (http://people.jupiterhosting.com/~phurley/files/dods-overviews/dod_snow_battlefield-overview.rar)
dod_passage_b2 (http://people.jupiterhosting.com/~phurley/files/dods-overviews/dod_passage_b2-overview.rar)

I also stamped in the corner of each map my server URL, if any map makers are reading this, PM me directly and I'll be happy to send you an unstamped version for distribution. A week went by with no response to that at all, are map makers that have no overviews against having overviews in your map or something?
It is actually more work than you might think to make these properly, but I would be happy with a thankyou in the readme file.

I've tested this quite a bit on my server and no problems reported with it, except if your running game client has loaded a map, you have to quit the game and restart it for it to pick up the new overview.

edit: added newer hobofire, and expanded on the mapmaker offer part.

Nice to do them, your name would have been fine since you made them, but adding a url is something I see not point too and will not use them unless you change it to something like made by...

I don't see the point to pay for a server and advertise other ppl server.

I guess you will see my point. I already made some and know how much work it is, but rather make my own then use one with a server ip on it.

EDIT: after downloading them, I realise you put your web server address, not a game server ip and port wich I tought you were saying. This is definitly more acceptable. Sorry for my post, just got confuse at first reading your post.

So the only response here is 1 complaint, and exactly zero map makers taking me up on my offer to send them unstamped overviews. Or maybe thats hard to comprehend? When I say unstamped, I mean overviews without my little logo, I could even put a stamp with the map name or something. I offer to do free work with no credit, and nobody takes me up on it, yet I get complaints about the ones I distribute on my server. WTF?

I think that in the end you'll find that those who care enough about their releases have gone the extra length and added their own minimap. If the rest didn't care for them for their initial release, why would they now?

I appreciate the time it takes though, and I must say that it's pretty generous of you to offer such help for so many maps.

Well, if I'm not mistaken, any end-user can download these and have minimaps in-game for those maps. Or server owners can add them to a .res file and users can DL from there. So at least there's that. Don't worry, I appreciate it Ratty. :) And like you said, just get a bunch of server owners to do the .res thing and these will spread like a virus. Muhahahah.

Only thing I don't like about them is that they don't match the officials in style. That would take quite a bit of work to do though, and probably wouldn't be worth the effort, seeing as no one has even taken you up on your offer.

I PMed you about doing the overview for my map... and I do appreciate it very much.

I appreciate all who help me out with such difficult obstacles such as making an overview. I've had LOTS of problems with that, and having an overview for it would be a big help (especially when MANY people have no idea where that 4th flag is!).

So even though it wasn't in the intial release (due to some alpha channel problems), I really thank you for your work and will include it in the next release!

That may be true for some but not all. It really seems to stump some people, I'm wondering if its more on the admin side of the brain than the developer side. You know how developers usually suck at sysadmin stuff, and vice versa? Just a theory.

I got your PM Streamline, but your box is full so I cant reply. I'll get you an unstamped overview by tomorrow.

The overviews, like a lot of the code behind Source level design, is cutting edge thought and tech. As such (and this I predicted over a year ago) mapping is harder and it takes much longer to adapt. Given no clear-cut tutorial process other than using the search function in some of the mapping resources (VERC, Wiki) it's a wonder we have as many custom maps out there. Mapping in Source seperates the wanna-be-mappers from the real ones very quickly.

In a way this helps thin the crowd though so the percentage of quality custom maps against the whole is much, much higher in Source than it was pre-source.

Well.. As a end user.. I'd like to thank you for your efforts ratty... and when I get the spare time to get back to working on my map, I'll probably take you up on the overview offer, as I never really did understand the whole process for those even under dod 1.x...
