I sat down tonite and watched Enemy At The Gates for... I guess the first time since it first came out. Man - inspiration. Last time I watched it I think I stayed up half the night starting Koln.

Advice of the evening... go watch good movies!

Movies are a good inspiration, last time I watched SPR I played Charlie for half the night  , It makes it seem so much more realistic...

But beware of the crap War movies, man there are some horrible storylines out there (Windtalkers:confused: )

Its funny I get some inspiration from movies and tv etc but I mainly get mine from looking at real life terrain and thinking about how to make it look great on the source engine and how to tactically fight your way through it etc.

For instance there is a series of open fields in between the town and live in and the next town, its got this low rise in it that has a tree line of trees from the popular family, and then it levels out into a flat field again, the tree line would be perfect for have artillery or AT weapons dug in along with MG's etc. Once I get my current project done I'm going to be adding that nice little tree line into my next map along with some artillery etc.

Movies definitely are a great source of inspiration. I look at it two ways: design and flavor.

On the one hand, you can look at a setting in a movie and say "that would make a great map." So you study the movie and try to recreate that setting on a structural level

On the other hand, you can look at the style of a setting in a movie and make a map based on that.

So structure could mean: "Recreate the Pegasus bridge" or "Sniper trainyard in EatG" or "Neuville" in SPR or "assault on Foy".

So style could mean "snowy German town at night in the aftermath of a tank battle" or "house to house anti tank fighting in a little town surrounded by fields with haystacks etc" (like in CoD's Foy map in CoD:UO).

I made 1 map for DoD, and that was the unknown disaster named dod_loppem.. It was based on a really tiny bunker complex (read 2 bunkers) in the forest of "Zevenkerke", right next to a village called "Loppem" (both located in the west-flanders, quite close to Bruges).. My grandmother has been living there since before WW2 started, and stayed there during the war (in that forest) so that's where my inspiration came from for that map..

Other times I just base my layouts on everyday stuff (tried to map my school and house) or stuff I'd see in movies (<3<3<3<3ty ramelle attempt back in beta 1.3)

I watched 'Sweet Home Alabama' with my GF and wasn't inspired to do anything...

I get most of my inspiration from other maps, houses I see (in the UK country side there are quite a few oldish houses).

But the thing that drives me to map is playing dod. Every time I get shot from a random hide-y hole I want to fire up Hammer and make a map where that won't happen so much...

Pretty good. It's got a lot of tight close quarters stuff - and I promise it won't suck!

Cool! Will it have telescoping mortars that the user controls?

Let me ask you this, how much weapon penetration will you allow?
