Ok folks this is my first map made for DoD:S. I thought an open field with many trenches and holes (to avoid a sniper map) would make a good map. It is an outdoor/gameplay style map. I am posting it get some playtest feedback. If you throw it up on your server and wanna try it please let me know so I can play along and be there for feedback. I have lots of plans but wanna make sure it plays well first.

Get it here: http://oxygencube.com/HostedStuff/dod_death_trench_b1.rar

RAR Contents:
dod_death_trench_beta1.log
dod_death_trench_beta1.bsp
dod_death_trench_beta1.prt

I wasn't sure what I needed to host so it is all there. Please let me know the best way to package Maps and I will change it.

uhhh... you don't want to release your VMF..... definately don't want to release that.

...Unless you want people ripping off your map and making copies and releasing it as their own and whatnot...

oh.. shoot I I didn't even realize that is what I did. well I won't do that with the other versions.

Looks alright, although the trenches should be more rigid, they just look like ditches which have been there for years.

Ok thanks for the tip. Remember WWII lasted years, but I will take another look at the trenches, but I do want people to be able to run out of them at any time. I am in the process of giving them wooden supports and maybe some dynamic_lights.
I will post screens in the next few days.
meanwhile I hope some people get to play the map so I know how gameplay will be.

Another map is always good but this looks more like a paintball field with ditches in it.

well shoot.. I spent another 6 hrs on it last night... but if people don't like it I am going to dump it :-/

Don't dump it. Improve upon it. It could get better or it could get worse... really depends on the player's point of view. If Juggaknot thinks it's a paintball field with ditches in it, then fix those trenches, add some obstacles/buildings. Add foliage. Don't give up just because 1 person said he doesn't like it much.

For me, when I'm making maps and people just tell me "It's great! I really love ______" I think, "Thanks! :) but how can I make it better?". The people who give me negative (constructive) criticism are the ones who answer my questions. I take what they say in mind, and improve my map(s) based on what they said.

However, keep in mind that you can't make everybody happy. You also have to be happy with what you've done.

If you want some ideas on what works, try playing dod_verdun in Source. Or go old school DoD and give dod_3trenches a try.

I feel that a successful trench map should make it possible for a playing to traverse LARGE amounts of space, without exposing himself to fire. 3trenches could give you some ideas as to how to incorporate that into your map.

I agree, don't give up on it.

Thanks for the posts. I have been working on it and have covered some of the trenches and added supports and lights in them.. but I need to know if the game play works. cause I would hate to detail a map then learn that the game play sucks and then nobody plays my map. I would like to see some people enjoying it. I do think that if I make it look all pretty and such then more people will download it.

thanks for the posts again guys.. now sombody load this up with 15 other people and let me know how it plays :p

I am putting this on my server today, and will ask for players comments and get back to you.

This is an extremely popular map on my server, but there are a couple of minor complaints. First I have had to stop players choosing mg and sniper classes, otherwise they just camp in their own spawn area and opposing players find it virtually impossible to get out.
Second both sides can get into the other teams spawn area, 1 possible solution to cure both of these problems, would be to make hedges higher and stop players leaving spawn over them and add some other way of leaving spawn areas, maybe trenches with spawn protection?.
But apart from that well done.
