Risk is a game of world domination,
where the object is to conquer the world.

While I was day dreaming the other day I came up with the idea for this map. I use to play Risk! with my friends allot and it was always good fun. We actually programmed a TI calculator to do the attack and defend dice rolls faster so we could get more games in.

dod_risk room pic (http://xsgamedesign.com/gallery/supa/dod_risk/dod_risk_room.jpg)

If you have played my other source maps like breakout or breakship you know my maps are strange but fun and risk is no exception. The game stars with the Allies and Axis spawning in seperate but identical rooms featuring a risk board on a table with colored risk armies placed on all the territories.

There are 6 starting config years which feature the Allies and Axis occupying the countries they owned or influenced during January of years of 1940, 1941, 1943, 1945, 1959, and 1982. The first four being World War II and the last two are The Cold War. These are chosen randomly upon round start and sometimes favor the Allies or the Axis. The colors of the risk piece show which spawn points your team can use, ie green for Allies, red for Axis, and black/yellow/blue for neutral countries.

dod_risk start pic (http://xsgamedesign.com/gallery/supa/dod_risk/dod_risk_start.jpg)

When you step on your spawn piece you are transported to the battle map. The big world map uses the NASA BlueMarble image for realistic continent textures. risk_b7 uses a simple 32x16 pixel world heightmap where as risk_b9 uses a larger and more detailed 320x160 pixel heightmap.

Each spawn point has a linked risk piece in the world. You can capture a spawn point by walking up and touching it or capping the flag of the continent that the spawn point belongs to which denies the other team from using it. There are six flags, one for each continent. You must secure all six continents simultaneously to win. If you capture all of the enemy spawn points you will find this task much easier. You can see each teams progress updated in realtime on the risk board as the spawns change colors. Where your teams reinforcements re-enter the game can make the difference between victory and defeat so choose your spawns and objectives wisely.

dod_risk overview pic (http://xsgamedesign.com/gallery/supa/dod_risk/dod_risk_overview.jpg)

I highly recommend you restrict the weapons to small arms on risk_b7. That map was not meant for rifles and snipers and when they are enabled it makes for boring stand off battles. risk_b9 is well suited for rifles though.

I use these configs for the map in my mani map_config folder and the games are a hell of allot of fun.

Wow!!! This sounds soo cool! I never even though of anything like this for dod before!

This is opening up so many ideas in my head!

I cannot wait to try this out!

It would be really neat to evolve this idea into a sort of 10 on 10 take over the world war by location, a small match at a time!

It would be great to have some sort of notification score board in the spawn area that listed each area, who owned it, how many occupied the area. Is that possible?

I played this with a pretty big crowd. Its pretty fun. Sometimes I get instantly killed as I spawn, from people camping the spawns but not capturing. That seems to be the major problem. The idea is clever and works pretty well.
It would be cool if the dice were also represented in the battlefield of the map. LOL! so huge, rolling and crushing players.
job well done.

well I have to say that I am 99% against so called "fun" maps, but this looks so different that I think I'm gonna give it a try! very interesting idea.

the thing that puts it over the top for me are the changing spawn points and real time game board. this isn't just a funny looking map, the gameplay itself is different. after reading your post, I've just got to try this. :D

Awesome use of the 3D skybox to make those models huge (or so I assume). I thought about how interesting it would be to put an actual model, like King Kong or something, into the skybox.

This is a very clever map and a refreshing change from the typical town layout. I have played it several times now and have enjoyed it immensely.

Excellent work Supa! :)

dod_risk was a favourite on our server in 1.3
Saw thedod_risk_b3 in a map pack I scrambled for it thinking you had ported your map over.
Are you working on any source projects?

Yes I know happyernst, terribly sorry bout that. Check your PM's, I sent you one when I found out. Thanks for letting me use the name.

I am new to the dod mapping scene so there are allot of 1.3 customs I am unaware of. But ignorance is no excuse, I will google my next map name choices for sure.

For future reference, instead of Googling the map names, I recommend you try looking them up in our (very useful) Map Name Reference Databases. There's a thread for both 1.3 and Source:

dude! this a winner! played it a few times on my server (rogans heroes) and it really is fun to play. took the guys a few minutes to figure it out but after that it was all good. dropping in behind enemy lines, trying to grab a spawn point in a strategic location, looking every which way for enemies, great fun.

thank you for this, much appreciated!

DataTable warning: (class player): Out-of-range value (-3500.000000) in SendPropFloat 'm_vecVelocity[2]', clamping.

Can you do something about that? That's getting spammed in my server console for the duration of the map. I don't like not being able to use my console!

Edit: The map also seemed very laggy, network-wise. I'm not sure if that's because resources were being used to print that damn warning over and over, or if it's something else.

Edit #2: I think it might be nice if you put more detail into the actual map area. Like put landmarks into it, like the Great Wall or Stonehenge.

I was just going to suggest more raised land masses to provide a bit more cover, but his idea is better. ;)

also, can you add some sort of sound when you capture a spawn point and flag? maybe just flags. there were several times when I thought it was done caping and ran off the flag only to watch it reset on me.

definately one of the most creative and fun maps to play. very ingenious with the spawn points and being able to jump in where you want on the large map.

its such a fast and furious fight, and yet so much fun. with a hint of strategy :)

def recommended

Updated first post to include dod_risk_b9 (http://xsgamedesign.com/source/maps/dod_risk_b9.zip) [16.9MB] download link and info.

Changes from b7 to b9

-terrain resolution increased to a 320x160 pixel heightmap

-world size increased to accomodate rifle warfare

-world terrain texture resolution increased to 8192x4096 pixels

The new map size is horrible, honestly. Everyone on my server is complaining about it and it really does seem excessive.

I think it would be nice if you kept this high resolution map texture but used it on the smaller size.

Supa

b9 is very big and not intended to replace b7. It is an experimental fork of risk so I could see how much geometry and detail I could put in the terrain and what effect it has on performance and gameplay.

Since it will be the most detailed version I will make, I figured I would share it. I am working on another fork of the map using a 224x112 pixel terrain and medium world size that should be the best overall for performance and gameplay.

Hey,

I played this map (b7) a couple of nights ago and it truly is awesome. I played it with only six people and I think I was the only not-sniper, so I got shot a lot (as always :D ).
We sometimes got beaten by the other team just taking all spawn points, so we couldn't get into the action anymore. After that they just took all flags. So my idea to prevent this is also rewarding the capturing of the spawn points. Maybe count them as one point and the flags as 10 (or maybe you can take the values of the actual risk game).
Hopefully more people will put some effort in capturing spawn points then.

I also like the idea of placing landmarks on the map to give more cover (as I said I was the only non-sniper, so I really could have used some cover). I would suggest one per area, so it's easier to defend an area.
Now I think about the idea (and to make things even more complicated): I think it would be nice to make the landmarks also spawn points, but ones that depend on the flag capture. So if a team owns a flag, he always owns a spawn point as well. Don't know if it's possible, but if I look at what you realized so far, you must be able...:D . This way it also prevents a team capturing all spawn points after which they can take the flags one by one.

Think about it.

As I said it (and everybody else) this is a fantastic map ! !

If you read the first post this map is intended as a close combat map and should only allow semi autos. Tell the server owner they need to read =/ Anyways, I have gone as far as only allowing the mp40 and the tommy, works out extremely well. The map really does rock.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments and feedback. Its kept me smiling this xmas for sure =o).

Since I haven't had much time infront of my source mapping capable machine over the holidays, I have been researching other variants of Risk boardgames like Axis and Allies on the web. They have a D Day version that features a close view of France and its territories and also Europe and Pacific campain boards.

One of the great things about the Blue Marble dataset is I can crop any part of the world and create very detailed terrains for them using my perl terrain tile script. So next I will play with extending the risk concept to the Europe and France areas and see what happens. It will be interesting to see how the mountain ranges like the Alps turn out on a much tighter scale. I am hopping the erosion detail will become much more pronouced and provide greater cover.

I very much like the idea of adding landmarks and monuments, but on the world scale map it just isn't practicle. Stonehenge would consume the entire island of England in the b9 version for instance. On a smaller Europe campain map this idea would work well I imagine. And for the France D Day version it could even have a few buildings for each of the major towns.

Modeling monuments like the Eifel tower, Big Ben, etc would be rather time consuming to do alone however. So if you have good modeling and skinning skills and would like to tackle some models for such a map, please reply or get in touch with me. If there is enough interest and help for such a map, I will pursue it fully.

Anyway, I have to get busy preping for a New Years party tommorow so I best get going. Till then....

I put this on my server and it filled up fast. Normally it's an empty server. I set mp_timelimit to 999 so its 24/7 risk for awhile. :)
And of course the whining starts about no sniper rifles, at least I can say the map creator agrees it makes lame.
Even in b9 I'd rather have no snipers, then you gotta at least get a little close before you can start shooting.
