Looks a tad dark for my money, considered putting in some streetlights? Might have the usual issue where depending on your graphics card it will be darker/lighter for some people~ Just seems a bit dark as it is

Had a quick run through by myself.

It's not so much that it's too dark, but that the shadows are too contrasted against the general lighting. That is to say the shadows are too harsh.

Make the shadows less dark, and leave the general lighting alone, IMO.

The layout however, I like. It seems like it could be fun. :)

Hmm have you been outside at night? ;)

Its meant to be dark. I'll look at adding a few street light for the new release, but I'm afraid thats not until January some time.

I'm not saying it shouldn't be dark.

I'm saying that the contrast between your shadows and your general light is too great and gives the apperance of 'jagged shadows'... which are not only TOO dark, but also don't look all that great.

Besides that, the alternative (street lamps) doesn't really make sense considering the electricity probably wouldn't work due to bombings and other warlike situations -- and it'll look kinda cheesy (other night maps from previous days did this to light things up and, if you ask me, it looks kind of silly.)

Again, all IMO, but just sayin' --

Just some friendly constructive criticism. :)

I love dark maps - maybe you guys should have listened to your mothers and eaten your carrots ;)

Its just a pity that you cannot shine your torch on other players - thats the main problem

i think it could be a little lighter. it looks nice but like he said, i think it looks a little funny. i kind of liked the lighting in dod_zafod. it was like the moon lit up the map, something seems a little off on yours. good work though, it looks like it will be a fun map.

Nice one Rolk, glad to see you made it a night map.

I will be putting it up on [SAS] Clan Public Server #3 as soon as I get off work

Thanks for the comments so far guys.

Taking everything into account... So far the main concern is the lighting...

Cool map !!

My only recommendation would be to add some ambient sounds along with an env_soundscape to utilize the capabilities of the source engine.

May I suggest you try a little bit brighter lighting? I love night maps, but you gotta make it bright enough to see and it just seems a bit too dark :)

My recommendation
sky_day01_09
Angle: 12
Pitch: -45
Brightness: 175 230 239 50
Ambience: 43 45 57 5

Try that and see if it works any better.

Map looks great!!More moonlight or some firelight would do it justice....no other reason to lighten it up. You might wanna make some of the sniping windows dark..only an idiot would outline himself in a lighted window..that's asking to be shot.
The shadowed areas are just right..no reason to change any of those.

After 5 minutes of playing it crashed our server.

I say it was this map because we have never had a crash like that before, I could be wrong.

Checked the console for errors but found none, it was like it just froze.

Its a Linux server btw.

I would try it again but I dont want to crash a full 30 player server again, anyone else have any problems with this map?

No problems on our server. We run Linux as well. Server IP 82.165.176.23:27020

Also one of our clan members runs his own Linux server, and it runs fine on that as well.

Must be something with you server i guess.

This map has shades of CR44 in its gameplay, if you ask me. I like it.

If I had my druthers, I'd add more innner building access, complete with windows that can be jumped through. This adds to the speed of the map, IMO. I also LOVED the roof access on the Allied side, though I'm not sure if it's possible on the Axis side. The more angles of attack, the better and more enjoyable a map is.

Also, if possible, some flare bursts in the sky would be unique. I suggested them before in regards to a nighttime version of Verdun, and they'd work great here, too. Just a thought.

Rolk
12-05-2005, 08:03 PM
You could say it was inspired by CR44 -- Thanks for the comments guys.

I've no clue if it was the map that had crashed the server, and if it was shouldn't there be an error log?

Bocasean
12-05-2005, 09:08 PM
Actually, this map just froze and crashed on our server as well. I'll test it again tomorrow, but you might want to look just in case it is a map issue.

Rolk
12-05-2005, 09:28 PM
Was there any type of error?

Bocasean
12-05-2005, 09:37 PM
I don't see anything in the logs....it just stops. Is there anything in particular you want me to look for? Any place I should be looking besides the server logs?

I do know that I fired a bazooka shell and never heard it hit and/or explode. The map hiccupped during the reload sequence and then my screen froze. I don't know if that would cause anything, but that's when it died.

Sorry to report but ours crashed about 5 minutes in too, linux fc4. No error in log, output just stops and server restarted

Bocasean - Do you run mani on your server - we run Beta1.2D on ours, just wondering if that has anything to do with it.

Any chance to actually find out what was going down when the map crashed?

Sorry I wasnt in the server at the time, no one I spoke to could think of anything specific that may have caused it.

That make my job extremly hard.

I haven't had any problems and I haven't done anything else that I havent done in any other map I've made. I'll look into it for a few hours now...

HellStar
12-06-2005, 09:43 AM
They were no errors as such, just the player info, but I do remember someone fired a bazooka at the same time the server froze/crashed.

I will run this map again later this evening, I will have the ssh panel open ready to get any info if it crashes again.

HellStar
12-06-2005, 12:49 PM
Ok, I had another crash, but it was on salerno, 5 minutes into the game :(

Same thing the server froze.

This is after the recent source engine update (did 2 hours prior), so maybe its related.

Also could be mani mod I suppose, using v1.2BetaE.

Going to have to do a bit of forum hunting now to see if anyone else is suffering server crashes after recent source engine update.

Bocasean

Ran for at least 15 minutes okay. Had 6 per side and also seemed okay. I fired a few bazooka shots and it was okay, too.

However, I fired another Bazooka shot after about 15 minutes, and it crashes as I was reloading. It seems to have something to do with explosions or the Bazooka shell's flight path.

Yesterday, it crashed when I was Allied Bazooka, today I was Axis Panzer when it crashed.

Rolk
12-06-2005, 07:59 PM
What were you shooting the bazooka at?

Bocasean
12-06-2005, 08:04 PM
From the Allied side, I was firing right, from just beyond our first flag, down into the gulch.

From the Axis, I was firing from behind the burned out tank, down the fenced alley way, towards the gulch. But the shot didn't reach the gulch, as it was fired short.

Rolk
12-06-2005, 08:06 PM
Perhaps thats it.

You're mainly shooting it at the displacement walls, I'll install a bullet clip there and test it out before and after, will let you know how it goes.

Rolk
12-06-2005, 08:12 PM
Boom! THATS IT!

Shooting a rocket through the displacement wall each side of the little 'ravine' would cause the server to crash. I will do my best to fix it within the next hour and release B3 with more lighting ;)

Rolk
12-06-2005, 09:44 PM
--Updated see first post--

I won't make the windows darker I'm afraid. Snipers sniping from dark windows is a big turn off to all maps IMO. At least this way, you can spot the sniper and tell your team.

The lighted windows suck....no sniper anywhere is gonna be stupid enuff to stand in it.......learn something of what real combat would be like and use that in your maps......

Bocasean
12-07-2005, 02:10 PM
Since when is DoD like "real" combat? It's a game and MANY things are unrealistic, even if the theme is based on historical fact.

Bocasean
12-07-2005, 03:57 PM
Sorry Rolk, but B3 crashes too. I fired a Bazooka shell into a similar spot on the map, and the server went down:

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/5761/dodstquentinb300009tf.jpg

If you look about 8 feet or so to the left of my crosshair, you can see the smoke from where my shell should've impacted. As with the other times, I heard no explosion and it froze during my reload cycle. Also, I was shooting at that guy during the bonus time after team victory, if that means anything.

I really liked the new version, too.

Damn the fanboy has spoken!! A outlined sniper window is ignorant, no 2 ways about it...regardless if it's only a game..you make the maps where they fit your deathmatch style....too bad.

Wow, don't play the map then.

I make my maps to be as fair gameplay as possible, and not because one little sniper wants to be hidden in a window.

Map is taken down, doubt I'll release it, too many problems with it.

12-07-2005, 09:02 PM
Wow, that sucks, Rolk, I thought it was a nice map for more teamwork due to the layout.

I have had it running on my server for about 4 or 5 days or more.... Hasn't crashed once. Maybe it's linux/windows issues?? Mine is WinXP. Like I said, not 1 crash.

The lighting was fine, felt real.

The sniper window issue.... I just wish for once that when you shot a light on any HL based game the light would just go out. That would solve everyone's gripes. People would figure out that the dark window had a sniper in it soon enough anyways......

But I hope you don't give up on the map sir.

take it easy bro, I haven't had the chance to play it much, but it looks good. take a break and come back to it later. work on something else if you like. I know how frustrating it can be to find a bug that you can't explain and just can't get rid of, I've been there.

remember source is still kinda buggy. this may have nothing to do with you. my server is running on a windows box, so I'll bump to it now and then (b2 btw) and get back to you if I get a crash.

thanks for the effort.

[SAS]==Colster==
12-07-2005, 11:22 PM
If the crash is related to the shell passing thru what is effectively the edge of the map I think this would cause a kinda "out of bounds" error, ie the server just couldnt do the math to work out where the shell was.

In that case it would effect nix and win boxes, maybe expanding the map so there was basically room behind the wall for the shell to go would cure it.

Dont wanna see this map die, m8
