Explosions in the skybox

Has anyone been able to get an explosion to work inside the skybox, and be visible to players? This would be with an env_explosion being triggered. Tried it once upon a time and couldn't get it to work at all - they weren't visible.

I've tried it before and it didn't work, probably one of the many entities that dont work in the skybox. Try sprites.

try using gib shooters , just use a loud sound as well and add some smoke or spark entities near the gib shooters.

well fundamentally, you should be able to trigger events in the skybox, right? The skybox zone isn't really any different from any other part of a map except it is at a different scale.

The question is, what can the skybox camera display? Smoke obviously works, but that is something that starts once you get into the map and keeps going...auto triggered basically.

What if the trigger was in the playable area? That's just a random guess here, and I don't see why on earth it would change anything, but maybe that's it.

I think one should look into the CoD community to see how they do it, cause even CoD 1 had those.

Stuff like lightning and flakbursts would be very cool, especially on night maps.

I would of thought your new pals at VALVe could help you out there Waldo... or are you just being sneaky and hinting at things to come?

Explosions in the sky look more impressive at night *cough* maps *splutter* time

Ahhhh you make a good point there. So what you are saying is the trouble is with the skybox camera? Would it then be safe to say that the 3dskybox only relays images like cubemaps? It isn't a constant "video feed" ?

Actually just realised that's wrong as I have seen model animations in the 3D Skybox~

ive seen lightning done pretty good already. it was in some singleplayer halloween mod. im not sure how it was done though, whether in the skybox or playarea.

It would seem there is a number of things impossible to do within the 3D skybox. One of those is sound entities. If you take the b17s as an example, they have to trigger an ambient_generic entity within the playable area for the sounds to be heard

The downside is as you can tell on argentan, that the sound doesn't change direction with the plane. You can still simulate the distance (by placing the entity very close to the skybox) and the fade in/out of the sound too.

any luck on the explosions waldo
the best i can come up with is a muzzle flash sprite !!!
it actually looks ok when added to the sky above some search lights....

No luck, but I did download 3.1 earlier today. A number of explosion sprites in there. Pretty "old sk00l", but I want to see how they look in the skybox. Since it's just in the distance, it may be OK (?) Like combine an old style animated sprite with a smokestack that activates after.
