Architecture

I have been mapping and my map is looking pretty good so far, however, i have been looking at your guys's wips and i noticed what seperates your maps from mine. Architecture. I have the same bloody design for every building. The triangle shaped roof and every so often the flat roof. It makes my map very boring. I was wondering if anyone had any particular sites that had some unique architecture for me to make instead of the damn cookie cutter houses i make. THanks a lot for your help.

Try googling on WW2 towns, or European vernacular Architecture?

If nothing inspiring there, possibly a book? If people still use those.

Run around on the official maps, just looking at scenery and roofing, then attack it in hammer.

The best way I suppose is to start by finding names of real french towns, like colmar for instance.

Start finding these tiny little cities and youll be amazed what you can find in google images. Theres some really nice photos available. Once I started learning the names of some of these places, the photos started popping up everywhere, plus links on the sites.

Try looking up old postcards from the 30s and 40s. You can find some really beautiful architecture that way.

I think probably being artistic and creative with buildings is the way to go

just found this page (http://www.rural-retreats.info/stn-111000.htm) in google

lots of photos of French building exteriors and some interiors (the ones that need renovating are probably more useful than those that have been recently redecorated ;) )

Beware though,Architectural style differs from southern France to Normandy or eastern France as in any country with diverse climates and landscapes.
There is no real "typical french house"

Thanks a lot. I have been searching in GOogle with Keywords like WW2 Buildings, WW2 Architecture, 1940's Architecture, 1940's Buildings, 1930's architecture, etc.

Im not finding the results i necessarily want. But your page helps thanks. If anyone has some good reference web sites i would be very appreciative for your help.

Bear in mind you are trying to focus on functionality, not 'diversity', most buildings in France have to follow a 'dress code' for the area - so they would be fairly similar
