[WIP] Opel Blitz

for some reason, i decided to model an opel blitz truck yesterday, so i googled for references and have spent a few hours since then modelling it, to be used as a static prop.

i've got most of it done, but the front still needs work. i'm also not sure how much more detail to add, eg an interior, more polys on the wheels etc. so far it's about 6040 faces, but i'll be able to get that a lot lower for the LOD models.

renders:

i can't post a proper wire, the viewports in max are all strange where faces overlap for some reason. here's a screenshot from max anyway:

should have the modelling finished soon, but i'm useless at skinning so that might take a while longer.

Good deal man. I would leave off the guide posts on the fenders. While historically accurate, they probably were often broken off on the real wartime vehicles, would probably create weird collision issues with moving players AND they are just really eating up an extra few polygons for an easily omitable detail :D

Interior is a must really with the advent of Source. Most users have come to expect that level of reality. I wouldn't go overboard on the details, just a steering wheel and maybe stick shift, leave the rest to the magic of skinning illusion.

also (and this is your call) I would NOT actually model the individual planks of the cargo bed sides! I would simply use skin appearance and a bump map to simulate the board. It would REALLY save you on polys and look just as good.

surgeon, im sure you can find a skinner if you UV map the model properly.

When you done, post the UV + model and hope for the best, thats all i can say.

You really need to establish some communication with a texture artist or skinner to help you with all these things you work on mate.

looks very nice, surgeon!
are you going to do some small wreckage to it? or make a second skin which is messed up?

that would allow people to use it in different locations without having it look misplaced.

nothing worse than having a brand new & clean car out in the woods, half sunk in a swamp ;)

i also would make a tarpaulin as a separate model, so mappers can add it to the truck if needed.

Surgeon what program did you use to make that?

Wile E Coyote: there are only a few planks that i've extruded, it's just a box sliced a few times, and the exra verts will be welded together. i'd also flatten the sides completely in the first LOD model. the only reason i made them that way though was after seeing it done like that in CoD2 (http://img363.imageshack.us/img363/8600/shot01414ev.jpg), and thought it looked more like individual planks but at the same time is still low poly.

Watchtower: i might see if i can get help skinning it, but whatever skinning i try myself is at least going to be good practice, so i'll have a go first anyway.

pedroleum: i was planning on making a couple of variations, including one with the tarpaulin and a damaged version. i just need to finish off the basic model first before i make any variations.

AsapmaN: 3dsmax 7, rendered with v-ray. i did try rendering with better lighting but it still wasn't done after an hour for some reason.

small update, made the interior (seat, steering wheel and dashboard), and uvmapped a couple more things. shouldn't take much longer to model and unwrap, but i have also got to finish dogsector which will take time away from this

It needs to have like, 25 guys stacked in it and about 5 PaK's dangling off the back ala WW2 Online.
