[DOD:S] Deadbodies

UPDATE 3!

as requested by mahhag, i made another two deadbodies.
this time, they sit there, thrilled.

also, there are now 4 lods on all of the bodies, so they don't slow down your map anymore. (they were all ~4k polygons before)

look:

download:
main download (http://pedroleum.dod-federation.com/models/deadbodies_v2.zip) (tnx to dod-federation!)
mirror 1 (http://files.filefront.com/deadbodies_vol02zip/;4793256;;/fileinfo.html)

(all deadbodies included. overwrite old files if asked)

old post below this line:
-------------------------------------------------

UPDATE 2!

i added another dead body model.
place them as "prop_static"

i decided to make the leg and the arm their own model, since that way, you can put them wherever you want. they're also made as prop_physics, so they can be shot/blown/moved away.
place them as "prop_physics_multiplayer"

about the ragdoll. i have not found any infos about multiplayer ragdolls. the tests i made showed that ragdolls don't get "synchronised" over the multiplayer server. so everyone on that server would see the ragdoll a different way... i don't like that idea, since you can't use them as cover in that case.

here's a new pic:

and here's the model:
link removed since all included in vol2

for those who downloaded my previous model-zip, just overwrite the old one.

----------------------------------
UPDATE!
i changed the texture, so the blood near mouth and nose is the same red as the others.

use the download link from above!

also i changed the folders, since i did no changes to the gear-texture. it would be stupid to pack that 1024x1024 texture in there twice, since anyone owning dod:s has it already on their computer.

so the model is now under: /models/player

and the textures are under: /models/player/american

--------------
for those who downloaded my previous model-zip, delete "/models/deadbodies" and "/materials/models/deadbodies"
they're no longer used.

i'll try that ragdoll thing now.

evening!

i'm releasing a static prop for dod:s levels. the dead american soldier was made out of the playermodel. i altered the mouth (opened it and inserted teeth) and removed one leg. the rest of it is texture modification. there are 2 skins. first one is the "low gore" (top left corner on screenshot), second one is with more blood and dirt. (lower left and upper right on screenshot)

does anyone wan't more of them? i could do another allie and 2 axis.. maybe some gibs. if noone will use them, i'll drop the idea. its ....ing scary to model/texture them...

here's a pic:

and here's the model:
removed link, since old version and included in vol1.

Have you made them as ragdoll prop_physics or just prop_static?

pedroleum
11-02-2005, 05:47 PM
prop_static, since the ragdolls seem to ask to much of the engine...
i once had a ragdoll-axis in my map. if you shot it or naded it, the fps went down like mad...

Did you do the collapseable skeleton trick where you tell the compiler to remove/compress certain bones together? The SDK Male mode example shows how this works with the include files. At certain LOD levels it removes all the fingerbones and i belive drops 4 spine bones down to 2 or something like that.

You could use something like that but on the main LOD to reduce the bones/limits that the engine has to process.

The blood around the mouth and nose looks a little too bright. It needs to be a more dark, crimson color I think.

Other than that minor gripe, excellent work.

I want these as my player models.

thanks for feedback

i don't know if it would be a good idea to make them ragdolls... if you put 10 of them in your level, it could slow down the whole level just for the sake of ragdollphysics. (which i think are pretty bad in terms of granade use on them.)

on the other hand, the static one you can only put on a flat ground... so no hanging over a trench or something...
hmmm...

i might give it a shot, just to see how it works.

about the collapseable skeleton trick: if you nade one near you, the model and the skeleton are lod0. thats when i had slowdowns...

i'll do a testlevel with a few ragdolls in there the next days, so i can see if its worth the effort.

about blood: you're right, i changed the color of the legwound to a darker one and forgot the mouth.. should have seen it while taking the screenshots... hmm. anyway, thanks for input. :)

do you guys have use for them? i'll make more if you do.

would you wan't them as static meshes or as ragdolls?

black lotus: you do not wan't to play dod with one leg ;)

I dunno dude. The idea is cool, but I don't see a real need for it :) There are some maps in regular DOD that have static dead body props and they seems rather superfluous on those maps. These types of props truly are more for single-player.

What I find DOD:S REALLY lacking in, and it could definitely use more models, is vehicle props. Like a burned out truck, tank, ANYTHING. Getting real tired of custom maps with 500 tiger tanks.

You could always use LOD1 for the model - it is a corspe after all and its pretty beat up. Also, you can take the trick of simplifying the skeleton from a lower LOD and apply it to a higher, theres no problem doing that.

thats what i meant. will people use them in their maps or won't they... i don't know if maps need dead bodies in them...

i will not put them into dod_chicago ;)
they don't fit.

I agree, I think some nice plane wreckage would be a good addition.

As far as the bodies, I like them.

I think these would work great in addition to wreckage. If someone created a downed glider, you could have a few of these laying around. Same for a tank or whatever. So I see a need for them. I mean..I'd like to see them...and I'm sure a lot of others would too. If you made a few other models, that would be ideal, b/c your're not going to have the "same" guys laying dead next to a downed glider.

Wile E. is right though, more mapmodels in general are needed, but I see these as definitely being used.

Good Work!

Sure there is a use for them, I have already added them to the next version of my map, a few a strew accross the beach with random timers that have them shout "MEDIC" every now and then to add atmosphere, it works too :)

but from a placment point of view id love them to be ragdolls.

Top job though :D

LoL... It'll be funny to watch the BF2 players (myself included) run up to them thinking that they can be revived, only to remember which game they are playing...

Nice idea though :)

would be cool if someday (when sdk arrives) you could actually do that. not like revive the npc, but revive it and create a new spawn area there for example.

uhmm.. i don't know... ;)

you scare me more than i scared myself, doing those models!
calm down!! ;)

i don't know if you could do a blood patch. i'm no modder.... also, the deadbodies are static meshes, so there are no bones and stuff in it, which makes it pretty useless in terms of playermodels.

maybe someone will do a bloodpatch in the future. (i don't think so, since that content validation stuff, inplemented into steam, does not allow custom playermodels (yet?) on most of the servers.

all i can do:
i'll give out the files to the person wo wants to make a mod like this.
