Hey everyone
if you have browsed through the current source project thread, you may have seen a screenshot or 2 of my current project.
Well, now its ready for playtesting. I promised another group of people first, which will take place this coming weekend.
After that, im open to other places. Maybe if im lucky, i can be aided by the great Shane.
So with that, I have a few screenshots. There will still be changes before the first playtest, but now its very minor. Like adding phonepoles, some extra detail for the interior of houses...and i think thats it.

the map is pretty much long range, so i expect an increase in rifle use.
the map overview is like a circle with various sidepaths.
every house is accessible.
one thing i do plan on changing for sure is the hedge that marks most of the outline of the map. i eventually want to replace that with a pine treeline, which means removing most of the trees i am currently using and replacing them with types of pine.
i cant wait till i can play this with people. ive been working on it for too long. heh

because its a quiet little village that has only just been entered by opposing forces?

looks fantastic, love the building architecture, and the little fences / walls that surround each garden. the granite outcropings are well built, but perhaps stand out a little too much though, (im looking at the 1st & 3rd picture) perhaps not so tall and narrow, a bit more stubbier and shorter?

heres a treeline im currently testing out
its two layers of the same texture

i plan on adding some low poly pine models here and there to give it some more depth.

Great map, the layout sounds interesting, and I'm glad to have a more open map.

The first thing I noticed is that there are giant rocks sticking out of the ground in the middle of the road in a town and that seemed kind of strange to me, maybe you should replace them with some other sort of obstacle, like a wagon or car or something(just please not another Tiger model! I am pissed that there are no shermans or Panzer IV's, as if the only tank used during the war was the Tiger, and it was extremely common). Looks tremendous, keep up the good work.

Neutrino
11-05-2005, 09:05 PM
maybe its the pov from the screenshots, but the rocks arent on the road. and they are better than wagons b/c they block much more of a view, provide more cover, and ive already used plenty of wagons. lol
ill see what happens after a playtest before i change those. although i dont think i will in the end.

Neutrino
11-09-2005, 02:49 PM
might as well... i wont be able to work on it for the next few days

right now the treeline is only a brush. i will eventually add some low poly tree models to math the treeline, and to give it some more depth. but as of now, i havent.

Furyo
11-09-2005, 02:53 PM
That definitely looks good, but now the rocks really seem completely out of scale/place. You just wouldn't have 30 meters tall stones perfectly erected next to trees, which from the POV look the same size. While it would exist in certain deep forests, one might wonder about the immediate surroundings of those.

boy, you just won't let it go with the rock will ya! :p

I like the treeline a lot. admittedly it does look flat, but it would be nice with your low poly models in front with the treeline behind. I hope you don't mind sharing, cause I kinda need something like that for a map I have in mind ;)

btw, nice use of fog. the fade distance seems perfect. I hate maps that are too foggy, especially if the lighting doesn't match. usually feels like a cheap trick to keep from rendering too much. yours looks like it belongs there. good job.

Just to make sure, I would definitely see rocks where they are. Just not as tall, and probably a bit larger too. Heck what would be nice would be to place a rock "avalanche" amid the forest, but that would require a bigger mountain. Now that would look cool, and be realistic too.

Gorbachev
11-09-2005, 05:22 PM
Rocks like that can certainly exist. Granted I speak from a BC, Canada perspective where it's nice and rocky.

Looks beautiful so far, using Source for what it was intended. Can't wait to see the result.

yah. ive recieved many positive comments about the lighting.
sadly, before i was going to change it to lighting to math dod_flash. this was only because my treeline texture was not properly being lit to look realistic with my custom lighting settings. but then, it didnt look as good, so i worked at it.
eventually, just by adding a nice fog effect, i think it looks better than ever.

Oh man, is this map using the Unreal Engine 3?

God damn, the only thing I could think while looking at the screenshots was "WOW!". The lighting, the architecture, the textures, the fog, everything is perfect! This is really showing what the Source engine can do! This just needs HDR to be pratically photorrealistic! :D

what i still need to change (after some beta tests) is the grass. i need to get some more saturated brown, and eventually the same for the grass sprites. what i also want to do, is you see the grass model i use with each fence set? ill try to get that changed to be a little more yellow/brown. in time

Neutrino
12-03-2005, 10:15 PM
watchtower. i really dont understand. where else would u expect to see these rocks? i mean, its nature, rocks are part of nature, so, it is realistic. :(
not only do i think they look nice, but they also provide some good cover

Bocasean
12-03-2005, 10:18 PM
Actually, the rocks kind of remind me of a location at Gettysburg. Maybe it was Pickett's Charge....it's been 15 years since I went there, so my memory is fuzzy.

It doesn't look that obscenely out of place. All I know is that I want to shoot rockets at someone from behind the rocks....soon.

Watchtower
12-03-2005, 10:19 PM
Kudos amigo. Thats just my opinion. Everything else in the map looks so very natural looking, which just makes those boulders just kinda stick out to me as looking 'unnatural'.

I think theyd look better as more rounder objects than cylindrical. Just my e-pinion(tm)

Neutrino
12-03-2005, 10:20 PM
so its more of the shape, rather than the placement?

Watchtower
12-03-2005, 10:24 PM
Bingo.

Edit: Google "boulders" in images. I think that would give you a little more perspective on more natural looking terrain.

heres a great pic. Now just imagine those 20x bigger.

when i googled boulder, i found this as well, which kinda resembles what im using (which btw is default hl2 for those of u who dont know)

The first time I mentioned this, I had your exact picture in mind, from the forests I know in my area. Boulders like this exist everywhere.

The problem I have with your own boulders on your map is they're not on a huge hill in the middle of a forest, but at its bottom, after having rolled down. And as such they shouldn't stand, but they should be lying on their side. Meaning rotate them 90° and I'm sure it'll look a lot better :)

man, this map simply rocks. it feels so authentic and almost real - i've never played such an intense map before.

i dont understand why some people complain about the rocks... i like them as they are and i never had the feeling they were disturbing or unnatural.

EVERYTHING ist perfect (although i still can t find the right way out of the spawing points - it feels like iam running in a random direction and then after 5 seconds i recognizie where exactly i am. maybe that will vanish after some more playing.

SIMPLY AWESOME; CONGRATULATIONS""
