EDIT: Jan 13 , A new version (ver 5) has been made. Win panels lowered, spectator name moved to top bar, repositioned and recolored weapon select items. Also moved up the "Auto help" items. Download here. (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Commandmenu/INsanes_small_HUD_plus_icons_Version_5.zip)

New Win Panel (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Axis_Win_Panel_Ver_5.jpg)

New weapon select positions/colors and Auto Help items. (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/New_Weapon_hint_win_.jpg)

Version 4 is still ok, I will leave it alone.

Original Post....

I tried to shrink and clear the items that block your view when playing... especially in the centre of the screen, like any of the progress bars, ammo, health, player ID text, "win" panels and all the backgrounds I could find.

I did not do anything with the "help" item panels/text or the weapon select, I use hud_fastswitch "1" and have help turned off :p

This pack includes Player ID icons smaller by 1/3, and a bit clearer. Also there are the small flags inside the capture progress bar, re-coloured.

Pics...

Two man cap, US icon. (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Hud1.jpg)

Small Flag in capture progress bar. (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Hud2.jpg)

Mg Hud. (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Hud3.jpg)

German icons. (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Hud4.jpg)

New win panels and icons... plus the defend icon in the kills deaths notices (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Version_4_win_panels.jpg)

Another view. (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Version_4_win_panels2.jpg)

Download this tested VERSION 4 here... at your own risk, only install this if you are familiar with the dod directory. READ THE README... please :) (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/INsanes_small_Hud_and_icons_V4.zip)

If you want to make your own, go here. (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/DoDS_HUD.html)

i've tried playing with the capture meters but i never can get the transparencies right. Is it a certain bg color that makes it transparent around the flag?

Will the MG and the flag cap overlap? Very nice.

EDIT:
Nm tried it out ingame, looks great.

Do you mean just around the flag?

I wrote down a few notes as I went.

The method I used was only to get rid of the background all together...

The Capture panel Background…

If you want to get rid of the square background, do this in the HudCapturePanel.res file, look for…

"CapturePanelBackground"
{
"ControlName" "Panel"
"fieldName" "CapturePanelBackground"
"xpos" "30"
"ypos" "0"
"wide" "90"
"tall" "90"
"visible" "1"
"enabled" "1"
}
}

Change the bottom two lines…
"visible" "0"
"enabled" "0"

But to make it transparent I can only find colour values for the little man icons (both red in mine, as below)...
HudCaptureIcon.Active "HudProgressBarInActiveLow"
HudCaptureIcon.InActive "HudProgressBarInActiveLow"

...and the two colours for the "timer" in the progress bar (green and red in mine)...
HudCaptureProgressBar.Active "HudProgressBarActive"
HudCaptureProgressBar.InActive "HudProgressBarInActive"

There must be one in the ClientScheme.res file somewhere but it may be a "global" one that does more than one panel?

Any smaller alterations in that area may mean you have to fire up Photoshop and edit the areas you need of the image that is the progress bar...

dod\materials\vgui\progress_bar.vtf

http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Capture_bar.JPG

Hope this helps :)

No see, I want to keep the little background color, but when I'm editing the actual flags in Paint Shop Pro 8 (using the .VTF plugin) it turns the transparency white. Then when I do the whole save as .tga then covert to .vtf that turns the transparency to black. What can I do so it stays transparent?

Oh I see, you are having problems with the alpha channel, paint shop pro may not handle that? Or the plugin settings are not correct for saving?

I have Photoshop and that handles it ok, the other option is editing in The Gimp, but I have not tried the gimp on these files with alpha channels with a plugin to open and save yet.

I have The Gimp... might give it a bash to see what's possible.

Ok... I converted one of my files in the download (flag_allies.vtf) with VTFEdit to .TGA... then opened it up in The Gimp, I had to add a alpha channel, then I added a red dot in the flags white star.

It failed! It had a black background like yours :(

Then I opened the .TGA file again in the gimp, I got rid of the black in the RGB channels...now transparent :)

Used VTFEdit to save the completed .TGA from the gimp to a .VTF format, the result...

http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/allies_red_dot_theGimp.JPG

So you may be able to import with paintshop pro (I don't have that proggie) and save ok...

but do you have to edit the background of the RGB Channels... before you save it?

Great work on this pack. Definitley using.

Would you happen to know how to get the voice chat smaller on screen? From the mic, when someone's speaking that pops up on the right. 30% smaller would work well there too.

I've been playing with this setup ingame for quite awhile. I like the "shrinkiage" alot.

I was wondering if you could to a small modification to it. The stamina icon you have as a "running man", could you change that to a static icon? Like the American Flag for Allies and a Swatstika for Axis? It would add a little more color down there. It doesnt have to be animated at all. The progress bar is sufficient for that.

If you could that, that would be great.

The little image is actually a font.. dodlogo.ttf (True type font), as are the mg icon and others like the BAR and the little bullits in the fire select bar. It does not work the same as the flags in the capture bar ...they are images.

Have not tried replacing those with an image or another choice in the font file, there is a US star and German cross in the dodlogo.ttf file, but the colours are governed by the stamina activity... not the side you are on.

Heh... looks like a no go for a "static", red german icon or such, unless I can make the "HudPlayerStatusStamina.res" file point to an image instead of the font :)

I did find the place you can adjust the size/position... but I need to find the image, I did look at this briefly but didn't go on with it as I thought no one would worry about it.

Heh... I was wrong :)

I will have a look again when my commitments calm down a bit. Glad you like it.

I have started a Tutorial based on the notes I made while making my HUD.

It is still on-going and about half of the notes are not there yet... but it's a start.

Have a read and if anyone would like to add something you will be more than welcome.

I would appreciate comments and please don't hold back... be brutal :)

*Sorry for this bump, I didnt want to make a new request topic.

Your custom hud dosent work with the latest patch. (http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60369) Mabey you could update your hud compatible with the latest patch.

That's strange it went OK on my PC no crashing at all.

I had to restart steam because the server list was showing the old dod servers but that is unrelated to the HUD.

The most notable thing that has changed is the Win panel files, one for allies and one for axis, the lines in the HudLayout.res file changed for that too.

Basically if you reinstall the same files again it will look like the old one again but the end of the round Win panels are not big enough to fit all the new info in.

I am shrinking that down and lowering it a bit right now :)

Give me a couple of hours of testing and I should have something to release.

Also, there are still borders around some of the kill messages....unless that's intended.

I have had some success there but I had to stop to make a small map (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Small_map_with_capture_points.zip). It was getting like too much hard work running around a standard one :D Thank god Haircut made one I could adjust... his site is so handy.

The standard panels (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/New_Win_Panel.jpg) are just huge!@!!

The info is good and I think its a great idea to get a award at the end of the round for things other than kills... very good idea from the devs... it's just a bit big is all :p

So I am still poking around to see what else there is to play with... like this little project Making an old style menu for DoD:s, (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Old_style_Menu.html) a way to put in custom commands in some scripts and have a on-screen display.

Same as SxRxRnR 's "old style buy script" for CS:S, in fact it's based on it.

I post if I have success with the win panels, at least it will be quicker to do now.

Oh thanks :)

Yes I just wanted to make sure no files were in it to crash the users PC if they installed it after the last update.

The borders are intended, you will only see a border there if the kill or capture has your name in it.

The rest do not have a background, the intent there is to catch your eye when you are spamming like mad through smoke with a MG... they overheat so quick, why waste bullets on empty air :D

If you want to change that there is a page with info on that area... Kills, Death and Capture Notices (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/kills_deaths_caps.html) The second method is best I think, look more towards the bottom of the page for that info.

I have done some work on the win panels...

Win panels in spec mode (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Smaller_Win_Panels_spec.jpg)

In this next shot the Chat text is running over the panel, should I move it to the right some more or leave it in the centre?

Win panel after cap (the defend items are from another game... Photoshop) (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Smaller_Win_Panels.jpg)

Note: The hud in pic above has now changed see the first post now for the latest update.

I need more testing yet on other resolution sizes and maybe some coloured items for the win panel.

Now updated to Version 4 of the HUD. Version 3 removed. (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/INsanes_small_Hud_and_icons_V4.zip)

MUCH thanks INsane_dod. You are right. Those new panels are just plain massive. I assume you were revolted the same as I when you first saw them :)

Anyways, thanks for the quick fix. Hopefully we can get something small and good looking going on soon. Perhaps we can make it appear in one of the corners, without any much background (semi-transparent, perhaps?) I think that would look a lot better than in the middle. Maybe it could go up by the flags

for the win panel. is there a way to make it go completely to the bottom. and instead of having the back of it completely black, maybe it could be some what transparent, like the component of the hud on the bottom left part of the screen.
thats the only thing stopping me from downloading this set. otherwise good job

At least you didn't have a horrid dream where the default hud panel was still there and was 50% bigger than the default.

Ok... I worked on it :)

New Panel (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/Axis_Win_Panel_Ver_5.jpg)

I also worked on the colors of the weapon selection panels..and their position.

Also, while I was at it I raised the help messages up a bit.

Hint messages, Weapon select. (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/New_Weapon_hint_win_.jpg)

But... When you are in spec mode or dead (dead shown) the panel, as I expected gets covered over....

Spec mode problem for Win Panels. (http://www.dodbits.com/tutorials/New_win_spec_mode.jpg)

Need opinions please :)

Is the problem of the Win panels looking like that just for spec mode... a problem anyway?

I would like to get rid of the lower spec panel ...and move the spec name to the top. But that's just me :)

Anything else while I am at it?

EDIT: I can only move the player name up to the top bar. I really don't like mucking around with that bottom bar... too many problems :)

Cheers

To be honest I dont really have an opinion on the weapon selection panel, since I use quickswitch, but I am just fine with the panel being moved to the bottom. Other than that, I dont see how you could make any improvements. I mean, you could do a "complete minimal" style, but that would have to be released as another version.

I don't use that panel as well.. but I think some do, so I did it anyway to match up the rest of the hud.

I did move the spec' name to the top.

This is probably off topic, but I was wondering if anyone knows how to completely get rid of the "capture progress indicator". You know the thing around the guy while your capturing. I just dont see the need for this, since you can just glance up at your flag icons.
