I did a search and couldn't find an answer..

I've decided to try getting back into mapping, I dudnno if anyone here remembers me, I made that map DoD_honfleur, that was on kustom kettle for a while, and a couple other maps that didn't do as well.

Anyway, I've got an idea in mind, but I can't find any wad files in the DoDS folder. Do need to extract them somehow? I'm sorry if this is a "n00b" question, I haven't really mapped in about 2 years.

source doesn't use .wad. it uses materials... .vtm and .vtf files

welcome back to mapping
to use official content, you are going to have to use this unofficial form of fgd
it works fine and allows you access to models, textures and whatnot.

hopefully the official one will release soon

Sorry, but I seem to have a bit of a problem here... you say it uses .vtm and .vtf files, but in hammer when I go to add textures, the only file extension it will look for is .wad's? what the heck?

as far as i know, the texture files are now as sperate files, in your resource folder. They're not stored in larger files like .wad's anymore.

Easiest thing to do is download the SDK on the Steam > games > tools part. Its all set up for you (except DODS but thats coming). Just start mapping in HL2DM, it'll easily convert to DODS. The SDK sets up hammer entirely for you, no need to find compile programs, models or textures, they're all there ready for you.

That's what I'm using, but it won't let me add .vtf files, just .wad files.

And before anyone says anything, yes, I'm using the source version of hammer, I've done displacement maps and stuff.

check your initial setup screen. if I remember correctly there is a button to tell hammer to use .wad files, or .vmf. probably have that checked wrong.

You don't need to add anything to Hammer. Just place the vmt/vtf within the materials folder
