clipping displacements

Greetings,

So, I'm trying to use the clipping tool to diddle a cave into a hill.

So to start, I've just cut a hole in the hill with the clipping tool. But I notice after I use the clipping tool, the terrain seems to jump in places. Like cracks between the brushes that are a part of the displacement.

I tried to select the displacement and sew it, but nothing happens.

What can I do to fix these cracks/holes that seem to form when doing clipping on displacement terrain? And what causes them to happen sometimes but not all the time? Any kind of rules for clipping displacements?

Also, I'm interested in any kind of notes people have about using displacements in architecture. I have some decent looking brush based buildings, but would like to smooth out corners and things like that so they look better.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
jcb

Displacments are tricky things, they must have 4 sides and for them to sew the two sides you are trying to sew must be of IDENTICAL length or they wont sew.

best way to make displacments meet when making a cliff is to make to squares that meet each other then use the vertex manipulation tool to bring their meeting faces to the same location then manipulate as desired.

if you want I can give you a vmf of a map im working on that has cliffs that might explain it better

What I find troubling is that in my initial clipping - I haven't even removed any sections of this hill. All I have done is cut one brush into three parts. But nothing has been changed with the terrain apart from that; the "hole" for the cave I wanted to make hasn't been made yet. Is it just occuring because this brush I clipped which was part of a group of displacement brushes isn't the same length any longer?

I did watch a tutorial video and read most of the tutorial articles on VERC regarding displacements and they got me started. I still feel like I am missing some essential points, so I will continue reading.

Anyway, I've managed to revert my terrain back so there are no holes - after getting rid of the clipping I did, and re-aligning the vertices for what I had planned on clipping, thanks. Hopefully I'll learn how to correctly do what I need to do soon enough.

I would do it like this. I would also create each of these displacements before every manipulating them.
