SDK DOD:S Update - why the delay??

It would be very helpful if one of the dev members (hint, hint Waldo) could make a post with an estimated status update for the SDK to include an official DOD:S FGD. I feel like the new Source version is truly missing out on a great opportunity to finally have strong community support for custom maps, something sorely lacking in all previous version of DOD dating back to the earliest betas. Given the limited 4 stock maps released with this version it doesn't make sense that the custom mappers are forced to wait or use rigged alternatives (no offense to those who spent the time to come up with a workaround for us now in the interim). In fact, I could never understand why there were so few servers willing to host custom maps over the years. I spent many nights waiting to get into one of the Kustom Kettle servers or few others that consistently hosted updated custom map rotations and during primetime hours they were always loaded with players. The dev team has to know that a lot of us have been working on maps intended for DOD:S for quite a while now, heck many months. I strongly feel that the rather poor quality of rushed custom map releases with partially functional entities being released now are having a negative impact on how custom maps are portrayed by the general pubbers which should never have been the case. Again, it's nice that the mappers can use the modded beta fgd for testing certain Source specific issues but the problems found in most of the released maps are troubling.

If you don't have Half-Life 2 you don't deserve the SDK.

I agree with you Uvhausen, we are a popular Pub that loves customs, and would like to host anything of decent quality.

The game as it is, is just rediculous with four maps released, I feel like I'm playing a beta ....zzzzzzzzz..., no offence but lets get things rolling please Devs, at least for the custom map makers.

I feel like I'm playing a betaIMO we are (not that that's necessarily a terrible thing). It'd be pretty hard for anyone at Valve to argue that DoD:S right now is anything other than a public beta release.

Seriously Valve, we need the SDK, especially for people who only bought DoD:s by itself:mad:

Mappers should (for the most part) be groveling at Valve's feet in areas like mapping and modding, since they make them available soon after the game is released, and included possibly the single best tutorial and information base I've ever seen.

When CS:S came out they had to wait months for decent maps to come out, we'll only have to wait weeks. Just cool it and wait.

I think the delay is because DoD is using HDR and theres a whole bunch of stuff in the SDK which needs to be updated for it, not just for DoD but for Lost Coast, etc.

Collating all the internal tools/docs together and making them of a standard suitable for public release takes a bit of time.

Be patient.

The HDR reasoning seems like the logical answer for the delay. Still, I would've liked to see them add a DOD fgd without HDR support for now and then release an update for HDR specific additions at a latter time. I guess the good thing is that we can take advantage of this extra time period to add any extra detail needed to our maps and still playtest enough for chokepoints, battle flow using the unofficial release.

they got the stuff into 4 maps already so that means they already have the stuff somehow.

Actually I just saw a post about 30 mins ago stating the delay is for just that, hdr related things for the sdk. Imo they should release the fgd then just update it when its ready so maps can get compiled, tested, and updated with hdr options "if" the mapper even cares about adding it in their map.

documentation, examples, things of that nature, maybe?

no worries though, we can all make dod:s maps already.

I agree, I am losing interest real fast in DODS without some new quality maps. Oh and btw try using paragraphs next time, it's much easier on the eyes.

well the fgd should be released some time this week and the full SDK update should follow soon (whether that is a real soon or a Valve soon is still to be seen)

would it be possible for some "(v)ip" to ask someone at valve / from the team if sdk will be availible for DoD:S steam-standalone purchase?

because if it will be availible (for my poor self) i would start brushing with an old worldcraft :P
