What's the best custom you've played so far?

Here are the ones IMO that have left a memorable impression on meh.

dod_lerouge -> Small, but very fun. Smaller then flash.

dod_snow_sniper -> Good map, for sniping.

dod_omaha_v1 -> This map is great. Nice to have a D-Day map.

There are a lot of great maps out there but these are my favorite so far.

None of them have got past "meh" on my map greatness (tm) scale.

Which one did you like the best? I didn't ask for a scale. You can't answer anzio, avalanche, donner, or flash either.

To be honest, they've all been equally not good. Not one has stood out from the rest so far.

Oooo! I almost forgot. I played this one but I can't remember the name now, it was something like fy_valley or something that was a good one.

It doesn't have to be the best map you've played, just something that you have seen a decent amount of talent in. Please don't post if you don't have anything to say relating to the topic. Meaning = Post about the best map you've played, not if you haven't enjoyed any.

i agree with Ginger Lord, but i think narbeth has one point above the rest.

"There are a lot of great maps out there" = LOL

Hey, knock it off. You don't have to be mean. I am trying to encourage people here so don't be rude. Narbeth isn't a bad map at all but then again Ginger doesn't think any of them are good. If you agree with him then why do you give narbeth a point? Explain yourself. Or do you just have a secret crush on Ginger Lord?

I haven't been overly impressed with anything. Narbeth is ok, uses some good entity work, and has potential. So I would say Narbeth is the best custom I played.

Wouldn't you say, (I'd) agree with Ginger Lord, but...." ? Wouldn't that make more sense? Otherwise you just cancel yourself out.

Is it going to be a Star Wars wedding? Can I be the princess?

Oh no, the finer points of the English language are being discussed.

"I agree with Ginger Lord, but..."

Implies that he agrees with me on it all, except for the but part. Overall agreement aside from one bit.

"I'd agree with Ginger Lord, but..."

Means that he would agree with me, but the but part means that in the end he does not agree with me. Overall disagreement because of one bit.

And no, you can't come to the wedding.

He said he agrees with you. He agrees with you that none of the maps deserve a rating. Then he rates one.

Please stop trashing my thread and stick to the topic. I just want to hear what custom maps people like. If you don't like any of the maps then you should not have posted here in the first place.

Thanks a lot. I didn't want to come to your wedding anyway.

dod_narbeth was the map I was trying to think of before. There are a few out there that are actually looking like WWII maps and are turning out to be the most popular from what I hvae seen.

I have to agree with Prop. Shows a lot of potential and gets good fps also.

In light of the quality of the official source maps, it's going to be tough to find many customs that look as good as they are. However I will say, the official maps are extremely cluttered. I think maps that look good, run clean, and have an actual WWII feel to them will do very well. Sory, I have a hard time enjoying a box, with no flags in it, that looks like my 5 year old nephew suddenly discovered hammer and thinks it's fun like legos.

That is one of the more fast paced ones. I have fun on that map.

Any map rushed to be "I'm the 1st to map for DOD:S" has been crap.

I agree with prop. narbeth is the only one that I would even consider putting on my server and even at that, I think I'm going to wait until he has a chance to retexture some stuff.

that being said, there are a whole lot of maps in the source projects thread that I am looking forward to.

The quality of custom maps at this point in time is expectantly low, but they do serve a greater need at this point for dod players: more maps.

"Just give me a map, any map" is the prevailing theme to the greater population. I share the same sentiment too, I mean, Ive played dod_anzio for 2 years now, i dont care what it looks like, its still anzio.

That unfortuneately will spawn things that mappers will bluntly disdain and cause the general population to grow hostile towards those blunt, but often the truthful statements.

A few of these people  have yet to understand that this forum is not just a place to release but a place that we can freely express our opinions (good or bad) and should be taken with a grain of salt, so to say.

I havent had the privilage of playing Narbeth yet, however I can say just by the screens its the only thing note worthy in my book. But thats just my "e-pinion" (tm)

100% agree with you Patrick, if you rush something out then expect to get alot of negative feedback.

I've spent around 2-3 months now making my beach map and I'm still not in a hurry to release it for beta testing even though dod source has been released. And I also expect to get Negative feedback because I can't/don't expect everyone to like it.

So basically people need to take their time and put some effort into their maps instead of releasing something that the original doom would look better than.

I like 3 of the new customs so far, and they all share a common theme. They may not be the greatest creations as far as mapping purists are concerned, but they all feel like they could be something that took place in WW2.

Omaha isn't the greatest beach map of all time, but it is a beach map for players who were tired of Avalanche 3 years ago. It has an assault feel to it and it keeps the pressure on the Allies. It'll get old really fast I think, but hopefully by that time, more advanced customs will be released.

Lerouge is very small and a bit too congested for my overall liking, however the FPS performance of it is great and you can believe the concept of a tank blasting through a wall in a small section of a European city, as it's portrayed in that map. I'd prefer it if it was possible to climb on top of the buildings, which would add to the tactical variety of the map, without changing it's look or size.

Snow_Battlefield_Final reminds me of the Russian/Eastern European theatre, where the Axis juggernaut froze to a halt. You can imagine tanks being locked up in their tracks, and the cloudy mountains provide a unique battlefront that looks over the main area. It's a sniper fest, but it is possible to cap out on that map, if you use the cover and the varying mountain terrain to conceal your movement.
