Help with source skin

Alright so I'm working on a Axis source skin - but when I convert the .tga files to .vtf format, in game they apear purple and black. Maybe I'm going about it wrong - i extracted the stuff from the .vtf with .vft explorer and worked on it in PSP 8.10 - then with .vtfTool I transfered them back to .vtf files.

This is my first attempt and modeling / skinning so please be kind :)

Save yourself a lot of time and heartache:

Let's you directly open, edit, and save .VTF files without having to convert or anything. For Photoshop 6+.

If their coming up purple and black it means it cant find the texture. Most common cause is a VTF in the wrong folder or a VTF without a corresponding VMT.

no i put the .vtf and the corresponding .vmt file in the correct folder (materials > modles > player > german)

I don't have Adobe - I'm too cheap :) - I use Paint Shop Pro 8 by Jasc

I had this problem a lot before I got the .vtf plugin for PS. The game doesn't seem to like it when you convert from .vtf to .tga, some kind of info is lost and you end up with all kinds of nasty stuff.

Ok, it works now but theres a problem with them. Around the top of the helmet and other creases where the diffrent clothing fits together, there are black lines...how can I get rid of them?

Like I said, use the .vtf plugin for photoshop to work on the .vtf directly without converting to targa. If you can't use photoshop, I don't know any other fix.

I think the VTF Photoshop plug-in works with PaintShopPro actually.

Wow, the plugin did work - thanks guys - sorry I didn't realize that it was also compatable with PSP8. Slightly different install path but it works - thanks - haven't tested out in the game yet so I suppose I'll get back to you whether they turned out well.

:D

Although Nem did all the work I did mentioned to him that using the Photoshop 6 SDK makes the plugin PSP compatible. We call it an "undocumented" feature. ;)

Take the files for the plugin (VTF.8bi & VTFlib.dll) and put them in the following directory:
C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 8\PlugIns\VTFlib
This should work. Just open up the .vtf file in PSP and when you save it, it will automatically save as a .vtf file.
