Best way to make varied terrain?

Alright I was wondering what the best way to make unlevel terrain, the only way I know of is by seperate brushes....but it's really hard to get it to look and work like it should...so is there anything people do differently to get a good landscape?

If you are mapping for the decay engine then that is really the only way to do it. If you are mapping for source then displacements is what you are looking for: readme (http://forum.interlopers.net/viewtopic.php?t=1768)

Yeah, disp maps with noise, it quick and easy to do terrain now, i just wish that valve had set up the alpha blendind and deco layers like it is in UED, you could have over 30 textures blended on one terrain entity and set up deco layer in the map editor instead of through the material
