Where to put custom models/skins

Ska Wars

Here should be where you put your custom stuff to get it to work

Player skins:
steam/steam apps/(e-mail addy)/day of defeat source/dod/materials/models/player (player folder e.g. German)

Player models:
steam/steam apps/(e-mail addy)/day of defeat source/dod/models/player

Weapon skins:
steam/steam apps/(e-mail addy)/day of defeat source/dod/materials/models/weapons/(v_models or w_models)

Weapon models:
steam/steam apps/(e-mail addy)/day of defeat source/dod/models/weapons/(respective weapon folder e.g. 'garand')

Objective Icons:
steam/steam apps/(e-mail addy)/day of defeat source/dod/materials/sprites/obj_icons

Thanks to Wulf for adding Objective Icons

I've found with my player model skins you also need to put an extra copy into the

valve/SteamApps/(Username)/day of defeat source/dod/materials/

Folder or for some reason you get this crazy ass purple and black striped thing happening.

Wulf

Some more for ya Ska...

Splash Screen:
steam/steam apps/(e-mail addy)/day of defeat source/dod/materials/Console

Player Icons:
steam/steam apps/(e-mail addy)/day of defeat source/dod/materials/sprites/player_icons

Sniper Scopes (if anyone can figure out how to ge the transparency to work):
steam/steam apps/(e-mail addy)/day of defeat source/dod/materials/sprites/scopes

Crosshairs (again, figuring transparency needed):
steam/steam apps/(e-mail addy)/day of defeat source/dod/materials/vgui/crosshairs

Hope those are of some use... I've managed to get both crosshairs and scopes to register in DoD:S, but haven't been able to get the transparency working yet...

I don't know if its for ALL weapon models but my k98 and k98scoped re-skin model went in to dod\materials\models\weapons\

instead of just dod\models.

As far as objective icons go, you need to add a subfolder into the sprites folder to get them to work.

It should read:-

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\youremail@.com\day of defeat source\dod\materials\sprites\obj_icons ;)

Updated yer initial post to reflect this, Ska m8.

the game is getting them from the gcf, if you want to use them then you need to make the folder in the "usable folders".

Your allied skin directory where you put the skin should look like this:

C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\YOURUSERNAME\day of defeat source\dod\materials\models\player\american

Your axis like this:

C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\YOURUSERNAME\day of defeat source\dod\materials\models\player\german

Put the skins in those respective folders.

If you don't have a folder in that string, then you have to create it.

Hope that helps some.

What about for sounds?

Maybe someone could make a zip with the folders already in it?

that may be a lot to ask but it would be helpful.

Riothamus
01-12-2006, 02:05 PM
Generally speaking it is:

\Steam\SteamApps\YOURACCOUNT\day of defeat source\dod\sound

But in that folder can be many sub-folders depending on what the sound is. I have an admin_plugin folder, misc and a few with the names of custom maps I have downloaded.

Most custom sounds and skins will show you some sort of file structure in the zip that you should be able to follow. If you are making or using your own you have found, try downloading a custom one that does the same thing, look where it goes and overwrite it.

you missed the "models" in the second path. it must be:
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\emailadd\day of defeat source\dod\materials\models\props_ordnance

it's a little confusing, i know ;)
but actually it makes sense. in the materials folder are all materials (level textures, sprites/icons and model textures) so they threw all the model textures in a separate folder inside materials folder.

Sorry if this is considered bumping, I wasn't sure whether to put this in the requests or this topic. I'm having a problem installing gun skins, and the main question is, am I doing it right? or does it have something else to do with it?

I recently downloaded the new springfield model by Gen & PR0PEN, I put it into "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\MYNAME\day of defeat source\dod\materials\models\weapons\v_models\sprin gfield"
or that with a "\materials" & "\models" folders at the end for the materials and models it came with. I've tried a lot of things to change it. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

It's also with the skins, but maybe it was because I put them in the wrong folder anyhow.
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\MYNAME\day of defeat source\dod\materials\models\player\american"
Is that right?

Please excuse me if I'm posting in the wrong place.

Yes thats as far as you can go. Unlike DoD the files are locked in the GCF files and not extracted into you game folder. all you have to do i simply create the respective folder so say i wanted to add a player model this means i would have to create the files my self making a FILE STRUCTURE
eg..
steam/steam apps/(e-mail addy)/day of defeat source/dod/models/player <--(german or allie)
If your worried about the file structure you can download a niffty little program called GFScape. With this you can open up the GCF file to DoD:S and have a look at the file structure youself so you can workout where things go. :D :D :D

the default model files are hidden in a GCF file - you cannot ever erase them.

The "extra" folder you are seeing are from custom-made skins where the creator choose to use a custom folder. For instance, I now put all my files in a folder called "wile".

The normal path would be:

C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\*****\day of defeat source\dod\materials\models\player\american
for the allies and

.....\materials\models\player\german
for the axis.

(*****= your steam account name)

You can use WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com/) or TUGZip (http://www.tugzip.com/)

TUGZip is free..WinRAR is shareware.

I dunno if this is the right place to post this but when I tried to install a custom skin I put it in the
