If I'm trying to do something serious I try for usually slightly softer stuff, such as background music from Final Fantasy games, Silent Hill, Star Ocean/Valkyrie Profile. If I'm in a more active mood it's usually AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, X Japan, Covenant, Prodigy, Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, and lots of miscellaneous in between for both.

I listen to calm music, and that keeps me focused. Not balades and "Oh baby I love you omg" songs.
You swedes should hear "Kjell Höglund - Genesarets sjö" (love that song), that's the kind of music I map to.

I just listen to the Radio, usually radio 1 as it saves on resources not having any music players running, especially due to the *efficient* new Hammer editor.

i don't listen to anything in particular when i'm mapping, i have music on most of the time. dream theater, steve vai, jason becker, iron maiden, or classical is mostly what i listen to. but as i've nearly always got music on when i'm mapping, i always associate certain parts of my maps with certain songs now, or sometimes with whatever was on the TV when i was making it. i can't remember any off the top of my head but i still get these songs in my head when i'm walking around those areas ingame.

Modest Mouse, Blink 182 (latest CD), AFI, The White Stripes, Cake, and a couple others here and there. Those are really the only artists I can listen to for a whole album and not grind my teeth, at the same time no music makes me grind my teeth.

Almost forgot...Manson...his music gets the gears turning for some reason. Well, the guy is a musical genius, so no wonder.

I usually run my MP3z out of one directory thru IRC so I throw it on random but my playlist is full of songs I would only listen to when I feel like it. Thats why thick as a brick is a regular because I dont need to piss round changing tracks all the time as its 45minutes long :P
