recently someone asked me how I made this crater:

I thought this might be useful for a lot of people so I made a .rmf for anyone that wants it.
the textures used are from meredet.

feel free to copy, edit and use it in your map however you like. the experienced mappers will know that there isn't anything special about it. ;)

hopefully it will help someone down the road.

btw. the brush below the crater is NOT nulled because the crater itself is an entity and entities get thier light info from directly below them. if you null the "floor" then anything that enters the crater will be completely black.

enjoy.

is that just a standard octagonal crater but raised up in the air and some nice vertex manipulation on the sides?

the textures are what really make it shine.

what map is that in?

That's actually the best looking crater I've ever seen in any HL map.

Good job.

Good job.

some maps from the trenches mod have very nice brushwork in the impact crater department ;)

not sure what you mean by raised up in the air but it is from my map, dod_breakout. it should be released within a week...stay tuned. the textures in the pic are edited versions from another map. sorry to the original texture artist, I am drawing a blank :(

in the .rmf I switched them out for a crater I found in meredet so that anyone could load it up and see it.

link is good now. redfalcon gave me an idea too. the edges of the crater now have the earth pushed up slightly. I think its a nice touch.

good crater.

now remember this kind of thing will be done with displacement maps in source...but looking at this anyway could help some new mappers with ideas on how to shape craters and what kind of neat things can be done with simple vertex manipluation, whether using HL1 or Source engine.
