hlrad and batch compiler problems

first off, hlrad keeps crashing on me. it gets to the final light face stage, makes it to 70%, then I just get the windows "hlrad had a problem and had to shut down. sorry for the inconvienence". the .log file shows no errors in any of the stages, and the .bsp is just fine (I was able to play it, it just had all bright on). any thoughts?

another, seperate problem is nem's batch compiler not starting. sometimes when I hit run, the command prompt window comes up, but closes again so fast that I can't see what happened, and nothing gets written. anybody know whats up with this one?

here is the output from hlrad in the log file:

I know some of the very latest versions of RAD do this in WinXP, I had the problem.

Check http://www.zhlt.tk for details of the latest release, it mentions using the latest version of RAD that works.

You also might want to try Nem's Half-Life Compiled download:
http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?p=3

Lots of tools in that package.

thanks for the link haircut. I'll check to see what version of hlrad I am using and upgrade if needed.

last night I deleted a bunch of lights and it started working again. is there a limit on the number of lights? the lights I deleted came from a different map file, could that have been the problem?

afa nem's tools goes, I am having a lot of problems with them right now. on one install (I have 2 computers that I'm working with), it just keeps doing the above problem:
the command prompt window comes up, but closes again so fast that I can't see what happened, and nothing gets written
on the other install, the only thing that runs is hlrad, no matter what boxes are checked, it just keeps trying to run hlrad.

hopefully this weekend I'll have time to do a reinstall of nems tools, and update hlrad.

What version of Batch Compiler do you have? What OS are you running?

Can you post the contents of the compile.bat file in your Batch Compiler directory on the computer where the command prompt closes immediately? Alternately, can you run the compile.bat file from a command prompt to see what the error message is? It sounds like a problem with the batch file Batch Compiler is generating.

I believe I DL'd the latest version for winXP that you have on your web site. I'll check it out, and let you know. OS is XP sp1.

ok, looks like my zhlt set is out of date. I'm using 2.5.3 custom build 1.7.

hopefully updating to the latest version will help.

nem: batch compiler version 3.1.1 installed on winXP using batchcompiler311.exe

not sure why, but its not closing imediately now. the only thing out of the ordinary appears to be:
unknown option "-cliptype"
hlcsp v2.5.3 rel custom build 1.7

I assume this is also because my zhlt is out of date. grrrr...

please correct me if I'm wrong. otherwise, tonight I'll update my zhlt and try it again.

-cliptype needs a parameter, depending on the tools. It might just be a setup issue you're having.

-cliptype was introduced after v2.5.3 CB 1.7. More info (http://www.zhlt.info/).

ok, I updated to all the latest zoner tools. they run just fine from hammer, but batch compiler sometimes drops some wad files (so I get the purple and black checker patern in game) and this is a new one:

http://josh.whatsupslc.com/map/bc_error1.jpg

it looks like hlbsp never finished correctly so the .prt file never got created.

well, I guess the solution was obvious. I switched out the new hlbsp for the old one and we're good to go. wierd since the new one does work from hammer.

I wish I could avoid it, but hammer DOES work, batch compiler doesn't. I thought I had it fixed by just using the old version of bsp, but its doing the same thing again.
