well for one you only have one very large zone, i guess no one taught you howto map with vis in mind?

Its always a good idea to make multiple places where you can bock them with use of the skybox.

yup, the more bends in the road the better. I am also learning the hard way. hint brushes aren't going to help if there isn't anything that is supposed to be hidden. bend that main road up some. hide some of the map around corners. that will help.

Yea, we all learn the hard way about open maps.

You need to block both sides of the map off, one way to try and do that is to put building in to block off each side of the map. See attacthed image.

After you have done that then the HINT brush can be used to improve peformace even more.

btw, you keep taking about FPS, this is PC specific, can you post r_speed values?

WOW! thanks for that.... it really boosted the map performance throught almost the whole thing... only place i need to fix up is the road that goes from the 1 corner to the other and its all better

I'd put Hint brushes as probably one of the most advanced mapping tools. And in original HL they really aren't even that useful...often they're more of a detriment. The Hint brush concept works alright in HL2 though, but almost everything about the compile in HL2 is better.
