I usually use the defaults till i upgrade, but i re-origin them....when i recompile, i always lose some quality and get this horrid line down the barrel of the gun....can this be prevented?

Not unless you tweak the UV mesh before you re-compile. Its commonly referred to as "texture creep" and its caused by the rounding errors in the math involved in the decompile/compile.

One note though - you only need to de-compile once to re-origin. If you re-compile the model then decompile it and re-compile it again the problem gets even worse. You can re-compile as many times as you like from the original de-compile and it helps limit the problem somewhat.
