MRel - Six (6) skin packs at once! Plus Extras!

Okay, we're a day late, but it's better than never.
So what do we have? Besides the biggest release I've ever made? Well, since 1.0 hit the net I've spent my free time working on these skin packs.

You have no less than three (3) different camouflage sets to pick from for the Germans, the 2nd Ranger and 82nd Airborne to fill out the American side and the always popular British No. 2 Commandos.

Throw in a matching pack of textures for the view models and I think we've got a good release going.

However, that's not it. I've also got an exclusive movie here from the well known, if not downright famous, Faceman. I do believe it is the first 1.0 based movie made, too.

Our mirrors are provided by the following:
Phokus (lost his host, but thanks still)
Faceman of http://www.dodstudios.net
and
Spike of www.dodsupply.co.uk (Make sure to visit his site a whole lot. Why? Cause I said so.)

Huge thanks to them.

Thanks to RealyPssd for helping me get me hosts for the files.
Also, a big thanks goes to Tekkobra for helping me test the skins out.

Okay, I'm an idiot, I'll admit that. What do I do with the sleeve textures? Is it an HLMV thing? It is, isn't it? I knew it. Is it?

That was actually quite common. There was a large array of uniform variations. Some with camo tunics and plain pants, and vice versus.

Can't wait to get started on those 3rd ID models, Devin. By the way, Vandori... You're going in the right direction with the coloring of the tanker jacket, but the current color is just way too... vibrant. I suggest desaturization, darkening, and contrast changing.

True, but i agree with the other guy. Camo gear has never apealed to me. Its almost like action figures when you were little, and they would bring out ninja turtles in "SPACE CRIME FIGHTING FATIUGES", and they have all laser swords and stuff, and your thinking "what that wasnt in the cartoons at all". I only like the german gray uniforms. The most i ever skew away from that is the flannel coat the snipers wear. I always hated the pajamas the axis mger had in beta 2. And when the pants dont match, it just looks wierd.

Not that these arent great looking, just not a big fan. Love the brits though, thankyou.

Installed the Axis Spring SS, took awhile to pick because I downloaded all of these skins and keeping the zips in a folder for future use. These look awesome! Now, how the hell does one install the sleeve textures? I know it's in HLMV, but what are the steps involved? Do you need to rename the file sleeve.bmp? Also, it has to be same size as which texture? Thanks!

Thanks Vandori. These are very nice. It's a good thing we got the compiler now because I'm in the process of re-assigning the axis body meshes so that they each use a different texture. I want to mix and match these textures so that I can use more than just one set at a time. Right now my axis mdls equal out to 4.2 megs. I hope H-L can handle it.

you dont have to rename it and they are already the right size for all the default models... open the model with HLMV go to the textures tab find for example axis_sleeve and hit import then import the texture you want then click save model and save it..

for axis u will need to add the texture to about EVERY weapon except american and british pistol, knives, grenades since u cant pick those up, but since axis fight both americans and british in maps they can pick up all weapons so u need the sleeve texture on every one ;)

I just did it took me about 15 minutes to add the axis and british textures to my weps

Okay, figured out how to add the sleeve-pack texture. I added it to every v model that had an axis_sleeve bmp in the drop down, (Imported textures and saved the models) model in textures through HLMV. Took about 15 minutes to do them all. Next will be the British Commando ones. I'm finally starting to figure out more about using HLMV, although it can get a bit confusing sometimes. By the way, I re-named the file from the zip to match the axis_sleeve bmp before importing, I don't think it would work otherwise. Also, the axis_sleeve you are importing has to be the same size as what's in the model already, so that had to be changed because the texture in the models I was using was 256x126, the axis file from Vandori was 256x128. I was using the 3rd Panzer grenadiers pack before putting in Vandori's SS-Spring pack, which probably explains the size difference.

Very nice Vandori! I'm using the Spring SS one right now. I've got two suggestions on how to make it more realistic. First, the Waffen SS eagle on the sleeves is suppost to only be on the left sleeve. Second, the SS runes on the collar tabs are only on the right collar, the guy's rank would be on the left collar. Use this link for reference.

http://www.panzerworld.net/Billeder/SS-uniform01

Don't get me wrong, now. I think they're really good the way they are, but if you want to add a little extra realism, please feel free to take my suggestions.

PS, Your Pea-Dot camo is awesome. If you could do that pattern for Waffen-SS, that would be even better!

Bewis, I know about the uniform and the inaccuracies. That is a limitation of the models and how the textures are laid out on the models. I'm sure someone will release remeshed models, and when they do I will update my axis skins to use them.

'til then we gotta live with it.

My bad Vandori, I forgot about that. In that case, then, I can't find anything wrong with the skins. Keep up the good work!

05-14-2003, 05:35 PM
I think these are amazing and the spring camo is great - to me though they they look like the camo patterns were just layed on top of the defaults in the appropriate sections and the layers properties were made so that the underlying detail of the default uniforms get's used; a technique I often employ using seperate layers for textures, wear and tear and then overall representation. The sections without the camo looks like all that was done was a bit of color added the hue was changed to match accurate uniform coloring.

Regardless they are great! - and accurate in their representation.

Their only flaw is their accuracy as it pertains to being used in the locations that the default maps represent.

What Axis units were deployed at those locations would be the most important factor for me if i was reskinning them.

This is why the default skins have a general look to them - so they fit into all situations within the constrains of the games current features. "why wear green camo in the city"

Nonetheless No flames, only deep respect for you Man... great work Vandori.

MAP SPECIFIC skins are a big deal in HL - it has to be coded into the release itself. It requires each model to have all of these skins attached to it and for .txt files to be used in accordance with the map that loads to tell the engine what skin to use. It's basically submodeling and is very possible.

If not done correctly, though can lead to horrible memory leaks in the HL engine and certain portions of the skins will look as if they have been attacked by the ebola virus. Such was the case when the Frontline Force Team and myself tried to accomplish the MAP specific skin feature.

Mixing and matching Vandori's Skins:

This can be done too, but you will only be able to use 2 skins of the 6 at any given time, the way I see it. there are only 2 skins used for the body of the axis models. it's really only one model - so if you skin the pants a certain way, other models/classes on the axis team will share the same skin.

This version of DoD is great..., but really limited the custom community in the amount of variations we can have per team. The 3.1 method allowed us to have every model differently skinned and or use a different model altogether. this is not the case with 1.0

WOOTY TOOT TOOT to Vandori - good job

05-14-2003, 08:06 PM
Van do you think you can release these without the colored pants? I really love these skins, but I think the Grenadier looks goofy with a grey jacket and green pants.

It'd be cool if you did. I went ahead and did a little customizing and recolored the original long pants to match the field grey of the SS instead of using the camo pants. I won't release them or anything like that, they're for my own personal use in the game.

I don't know what the texture limit is for mdl's that the compiler or H-L can handle but mixing and matching is quite possible with edited models. My Axis models are currently using 3 versions of the main1 texture and 3 versions of the main2 texture. It's easy enough to do by simply renaming the textures that you want to use and then assigning the new textures in Milkshape to whichever body groups that you want to use them. It can get a little messy though because it's easy to get confused while working with so may body groups and textures at the same time. I think I wound up with one redundant texture because I assigned a new texture to a body group when all it was actually using was the boot portion of the texture. It does raise the file size for the model a good bit though. The two files that make up the default axis player model are 3.22 megs combined. Mine are 4.22 megs so I suppose memory could become an issue if you added too many textures.

05-15-2003, 12:04 PM
Yes Scimitar is absolutely correct. Although my description of the simplified process would be only be pertaining to the usage of HLMV to simply edit and replace. which is what most NON 3d Savvy peeps are going to attempt.

His method is of course correct. but... lets not hijack Vandori's thread hehe
