A mortar weapon perhaps? I read on several threads that the DoD team may be including a mortar class in a future release.

There's also a v_binoculars. Could have something to do with artillery spotting...

The binoluars have been in dod since as far back as I remember, but ever actually used as binoculars should. And as for the mortar, I think it was around the time of 1.2 that the dev team mentioned that they were toying with the idea of adding a mortar class, but never got around to it. Guess they just never got around to removing the model.

EDIT: sorry but not <YET> in dod

The model, class selection picture, icons, description text, etc, are all in there just waiting to be added, not just speculation, actualy there. Not that I am looking forward to it, mortars are definately one of the more irritating deaths (not to mention TKs) in maps that implement them currently, but they are all there, ready and waiting.

I don't know... I like the concept of mortars in Joint Ops. Why not DoD? Could be oodles of fun. Could be hell on a metal plate and feet, though... Of course, if it's a selectable class, FF probably won't apply to it unless FF's turned on on a server... Up to the admins. Choose a server that ain't got FF.

only way mortars would be good is if they brought back the gibs and maybe the bleeding too

DoD: Source. Maps need to get actual range before binoculars are added. Binoculars arn't cheap $5 pairs of binoculars you can get nowadays, they were expensive, complex pieces of equipment given to officers, and sometimes NCOs. They didn't let you see another 5 feet, they let you see another 500 meters and beyond. They were given to people who actually needed to see far, to see what was up ahead. HL2 max mapsizes at a 1/1 scale arn't even a full mile, and in the cramped environments we have now due to engine limitations, they still won't be needed.

They're useful for marking targets in ToD when people without binocs can't see the enemy. I'm sure the clever lads in the DoD team can come up with something equally useful.

But maps have longer visual ranges in ToD.

Perhaps they're preparing to migrate to Source. Developping their resources now, building up their tools and ideas and all.

i think if source maps have a size about 2x the size of caen or jagd mortars and binoculars should be in

especially cuz w/ the new engine, hiding should be easier...u dont stick out, more bushes that look more real and such....they could prove quite useful

wow....dod source has such potential

You can scale the maps to almost whatever you want by scaling the size of the player, NS already does it, which requires a special file to be used during map compiling to define the new hulls.

The only problem with that is you wont be able to make small details in your map.
