Well I thought I'd start some discussion in here about mapping for dod:s and the eventual dod2

Basically what are you looking forward to? Bigger more wide open areas? better entity system? destructable terrain? better skybox system?

Well I'll start the ball rolling,

Thing i can't wait for

Making larger open areas, beach maps here I come :)

Destructable terrain, well I'm taking a nice stroll on my beach map, BOOM! whoa nice big hole there from that mortar, sweeet :)

More details for sure, every mappers got to like that aspect :)

Well thats enough for now, discuss, discuss, los, los, los ;)

Thats something I hadn't thought about much. We might be able to finally make better looking archways, curved roofs, and all sorts of things. Including fences that have those spheres on them aswell ;)

definately by far is the ability to have better curves and better looking terrain that isnt angled! And Also the ability to add a bigger level of interactivity into maps (wooden fences and doors that break up when shot, when walls fall over, have rubble that builds up, furniture and other objects that fall away and break into the street. all that good stuff.

Im looking forward to creating better environments. No more flat hedges, perfect looking terrain and possibly easier.

The one thing im not looking forward to is how easy this will be.

No leaks, no keeping eye on r_speeds all the time and no (current) huge amount of work to keep them right.

But there will be quite large amount of work with more detailed maps :-\, I hope prefabs will be back.

We know how the HL2 sky box system will work (at least i do :p)

basically, the map is built, and then u make a seperate small sky box out side of the map, containing background houses etc.

it is then scaled up and seen in the map.

From what I've heard this is a larger focus on prefabs. Just this time they should be a little nicer looking :p

Bigger maps if more players...para drops...beach landings...
The comeback of the movewith... See submodels in hammer...
Don't listen to those who ignore r_speeds.

Yeah, ignoring r_speeds and polies still wouldn't apply. It IS still a game. The poly counts for players has only slightly jumped in HL2. The secret is more in the abilities and ways you can now make certain effects and other goodies that aren't as hard on the engine. There are still limitations, a hi-poly bridge is still a hi-poly bridge, it'd be fine for movies, but games have lots of additional parts to them that require computer power.
