Community Texture Project

Watchtowers thread gave me an excellent idea for a project the mapping forum could work on - it would improve links and should boost the custom mapping community to.....it worked before!!!

Anyone remember when everyone used to submit a few textures each then a big wad was made from it? Well I was thinking that maybe this same method can be used but with a slight difference...

Every few weeks, a new "texture project" thread is created, for example....one week we have a "Water textures" thread, where everyone can submit their water textures and then another week we can have a "sand textures" thread, etc until we have managed to build up a large collection of .wad files for use by the DoD mapping community....I believe it can definately work!!!

I'm just creating this thread to see who would be interested really, just reply and let me know if you think its a good idea

Sounds like fun! Is this wad supposed to be for DoD or DoD:S?

With HL2 around the corner, it would make sense to get started in that direction.

Have Valve released any specs yet for the Source engine, like how big textures can be and how bump/normal maps will be implemented and stuff like that?

Yes, like at the COunter-Map forums...

What would you guys think of a 15 minute mapping spree? Where everybody makes 1 enterable building below 150 wpoly or something like that, and 2 "scenery" buildings, and then we put it together and release it?

I like the idea, it would definantly make alot more textures available for everyone out there, also there could be a week were we could run a "Reedited texture" week were people can submit there modified versions of other peoples textures, with of course full rights for the original authors of the textures ;)

Good idea, but hard to do. The days of the Forum wads are gone for now i think. The community has changed a lot.

However, with hl2 comming around, expect more of the old faces. Hopefully me included :D

This was tried once in the past...I never heard any more about it, so I don't imagine it went very much better than you'd imagine it would, what with the conflicting building scales, styles, vis blocking problems, gameplay balance problems...(3 days pass)....and not to forget, the map limits problems. Better just let that one die.

A community wad works though...its even been done before!

Now then, if I could only draw something, or lived in Europe, or had a digital camera, or a regular camera for that matter, then I could make a texture.

Hmm...well you need a photo editing programme like PS,
but except for that all you actually need is google, imagination
and patience...:)
