Looking nice.

My input: Flyby.wav sound and random scripted bombing :D
Lots of rubble and fires
Maybe rain :o
forwarding spawns maybe
Flags inside buildings - buildings are strategically vital.

Needs more of a "war" feel to it, looks pretty modern too for some reason.....but other than that its looking really good :)

you can prolly do without hte rubble if you just some tanks, half tracks, barbed wire..etc...

looks like a nice start. how about making the buildings a little less square. mix it up a little :)

doesnt look very warish. Add some rubble, broken buildings, vehicles. if I were you, i would alter/change those textures.

last time i checked france was left to **** .... unless this is a town pre 1941 ... then its great :P lol

destroy the buildings, make rubbles from the destroyed buidlings, windows, sandbags, crates, a few tanks or half tracks, stuff like that.

nice change from the rest of the dod maps...finally a map with a slightly different look...

I have tried to make it look differnt from all the other maps out there. As for the fact theres no damage, I was setting it early in the war with the brittish fighting a rear guard action through the town. There is going to be a certain amount of damge but I want to leave it open to promote faster play, and hopefully reduce camping.

**edit**
Quick look in my ww2 book I have a possible name. I found a town called Arras where the Germans and Brittish met. This early in the war the town would of been un touched. My map could be set just before the two sides met hence zero damage.

well then if you arn't going to put damaged structures or rubble in make up for it by using complex brushwork, right now the buildings are cubes with cs looking textures on them, make complex buildings with arches and other enhancements that will offer cover options

The cover at street level is going to be provided by doorways and tanks etc in the street. The brushwork is as detailed as I can have it to keep r_speeds low. I started with a lot more complex brushwork but was forced to strip it out in order to keep things below 800. As for the textures I am no texture artist but they are taken from photos I took in france last week. I feel they capture the feel and look of a small french town well so I dont feel the need to change them.

Tom, just curious, could u post some of the pics of your previous "more advanced" brushwork?

Very original, doesn't listen to these fools that want you to dirty it up with rubble and such. Keep doing what you were doing, you barely see mappers stray from the norm around here. Everybody just wants rubble and destroyed towns. DoD needs a new touch of originality in mapping.

Keep on keepin on!

hey. why not build a fricken space ship while were at it. the complaint is good. Its called constructive criticism. Thats what you want when posting here, isnt it? I dont wanna start something, but by editing those textures to look more ruffed up, i think the map would look a ton better. and give a different road. Maybe use cobble?

The map kinda looks like City17. Looking good.

The textures just seem to post-date WWII era by far. It doesn't look period at all, the cement and sidewalks need a very different texture, the telephone poles would be quite different...(maybe look at escape or something, the wires have huge riggings and follow along side the building walls. As it stands it just seems almost New York like...not '40s France.

Who said anything about a space ship?

Personally, I saw nothing constructive in it. No offense. The same comments are in every map thread here. "make it more war-ish" "add some rubble" "dirty it up". I agree that the textures would be perhaps nicer a tiny bit more detailed and dirty.

But the thing is, dod maps tend to look alike cause noone strays from the norm...you get the same type of criticism every thread. Someone has came here with something totally different from what your use to seeing so why have them change it, just to meet the typical dod standards?

Just because the maps use the same textures doesnt mean they are the same maps.

Textures are nice, photo-style with kept style on whole map. Map lacks war-feel, though, clean streets, clean walls. But you will have problem with r_speeds. They are quit high now with very simple brushwork (I mean flat long walls, etc.) If you start to add rubble and destroy it a little I'm afraid it will become unplayable.

Haha ok. I never said that. Cheers.

Now that I think of it, rubble might be a good idea with the already looking high r_speeds could help block vis. But then again you said you wanted faster play.

I'm not a mapper, so all I care about is gameplay. I don't care how its "supposed" to look, or how complex or plain your texttures are.

From what I can see in those pics, there is no vertical fighting going on. It looks like it all happens on the ground. Very limited in terms of game play. I don't see any usable windows or fire escapes.... maybe this was a bad selection of pics, but it looks like a rat maze, with pretty, tall building serving as the walls.

Great effort though ..

i agree on the texture change.....one thing though you said leaving the streets pretty empty or whatever i think to keep gameplay going.....if you have long streets that are very empty than this will turn into a sniper/kar/enfield war. me personally i like having quite a bit of stuff on the streets when i make maps to keep it close actioned and such.

as for the rubble thing....do waht ya want....the reson why alot of people have the destroyed towns and such is because that's actually how WW2 was. unless of course your making a map based out of a time when no one battled in the city until they met. because probly after 1943 or possibly even 42 there probably weren't too many untouched cities/towns in france or other places in europe.

that's my 2 cents.

Youve captured the essence of a large, urban city quite well. Im also working on a map and have employed similar techniques. Regardless of that, the brushwork is pretty nice.

most of the previous suggestions are good.

Textures look new and original. **hopefully original

This might be a great way to start a Paris map. Since its large and a french town. In the fight for Paris, citizins started off by holding the police station, grabbing weapons and defending the area. Just an idea.

As for the war torn feel -- not too many current maps are all that chock full of rubble either, so dont worry about that. Its your map, doesnt have to be an obliterated pile of rocks. If your gonna make an 'intact' city, at least provide a good ambience (snaps and pops) and a few hot spot areas a bit destroyed or damaged.

Add some flybys (suggested previously) and a good amount of places to use tnt to blow holes and make new paths.

Sniper spots in high windows, etc. Other than that the map looks well done so far, keep it up.

Wow--this really looks like a French City! :D

The powerlines maybe a bit much initially, but having seen color photos of French towns and cities before and after "war", this is just plain excellent.

Awesome work! Now the focus is'int tanks or vehicles, but just plain infantry combat--awesome work! :D
