[idea]Subpen Map

Okay, wel I have had many ideas, many of which have failed as they have been too big in scale. First I had the bridge too far map idea which fell apart very fast, then my trench map (which is being handed over for now to fix some errors) and now a more possible idea.

Many, actually almost all DoD maps are outdoors mainly because the fighting took place outdoors. But one of the problems with the Half-Life engine is large open spaces. So what can you do to speed up DoD without too much hard work? Make maps more indoors and closer in. Unfortunately this isn't entirly possible since many scenarios need to be outdoors.

One type/style of map though that hasn't been tried (to my knowledge) is one that infiltrates an underground facility. While yes many maps have quiet large underground areas, the main focus of the maps is still outdoors. And that's where I got the idea of a subpen raid map. It would work well because:
1. It would be 95% indoors
2. Can use the maximum area both (across all three axis) without lagging
3. Trp_Jed's brilliant U-Boat model ;)
4. Interesting gameplay
5. Massive possibiliies for objectives
ie allies - destroy u-boat (duh)
- destroy facility (by blowing up fuel)
- capture facility
- cut power
- capture documents
- steal u-boat
axis - capture top level to cut allies off
- scuttle u-boats
- switch to auxillary power (say when power is cut)
- defend facility (duh!)
- wipe out allied team (like para map)
- safely transport documents out of facility
6. Faster completion time (as indoor modelling is easier than outdoor)

Neway what to you people think? I wish to do this but I'm limited to time, so if anyone wants to comap say in a months time with me, just ask!

A U-boat pen wouldn't be too hard if you think about it geometrically. Its pretty much a box with flat side so if your careful about adding details and don't split the main faces you could probably model a reasonable size single boat pen in only a handful of w_polys. That and the fact the bulk of the texture is a dullish concrete.

I've seen pics of various pens and their not all monsters like St. Nazaire - there are some nice little one or two berth pens along the west coast of France.

I think you could do a pen fairly easily and then maybe have the rest of the map as bunkers/storerooms/machinerooms/etc. at the back of it.

I think it was MoH that had the sub-pen mission...very well done so that's a good place to start...it'll be hard to make a map that big in HL1 though and with our weapons charcteristics it might make sense to make a busted-up sub-pen map...at least that way you could break up some of the really long site lines.

The other way to do this would be to tie the sub up to a small town dock and just use it as a spawn location (German Sabatours Attack Sleepy Frnch Village!! Film at 11!!).

Or...go completely historical but wait for the HL2 and use that engine...which makes sense...remember the dock scenes from the HL2 vids? There's great potential there.

can somone whos hammer works clip the u-boat ??
every time i go longer down than the front cannon the model disapers ..
so its kinda hard to do the clip
damn its a long time since i last mapped
cant remember all shortcuts ...

mXed, I want to really work on this map! I'm pretty sucky out outdoor stuff so an indoor map would be my type of thing. Neway just add ur email to ur MSN.

@ Trp. Jed: That's exactly what I mean with the pen itself. It is such simple area to make. Add in a few lights, barrels and crates it would fit the scene. The actual setting for the attack would be fictional (how I planned it). Probably a subpen in Northern Germany that gets raided in early 1945 still during winter. Otherwise, besides St Naizaire (which would require HL2 to do) I can't think of any other subpens (cept the one in MOHAA ;) )

@Fuzzdad: I don't think you would need HL2 to do it. You look at most maps and they are pretty level, not using even close to the maximum 4000 odd units on the z-axis. Being indoors also fixes up the line of site problems as you have shorter corridors connecting to as Trp. Jed said bunkers/storerooms/machinerooms/etc. I mean the subpen doesn't also need to be the focal point of the map. I believe that, fair enough a sub can be one objective but say the engine room can be the other. The good old locked door or gate can limit the detail needed (ie only one pen accessable but say the neigbouring one is viewble)

Well thanx for feedback, gods of modelling and mapping respectively (yes i am sucking up :p) and mXed.dk I'll pm u ;

Okay I brainstormed a few more ideas. The map is to be called dod_belowzero as 1. IS during winter and 2. is underground (so name is appropriate).
Now for objectives:
British: - Destroy the U-Boat
- Set charges on the Engine Room
- Prevent Axis from completing objectives

Axis:
- Recapture the documents from the upper facility levels and bring it to the motor pool
- Reach the upper facility levels and send a radio message for reinforcements
- Hold Allies off for 15 minutes

I think the map will have about 4 levels in it as follows:
- Ground (Allied spawn), consists of facility entrance through a bunker
- 1st level: Radio room, office, bunker, stairs, elevator
- 2nd level: Engine room, motor pool, command room (overlooking pen)
- 3rd level: subpen, crew quaters, munitions

Any other ideas?

i liek the idea, i had this idea once but then i thoguht to myself...

wouldnt it be strange to have continuous re-enforcements in an area like this. i would of thought it would be a select group of soldiers or something. but it is dod after all :p

PARA STYLE! :D

They removed para entity support in 1.2.

But of course, with a set of entities:
1. dod_capture_area (covers the entire map. link this to a Master. Should be Off be default. When On, this is used to determine whether the entire map consist of ONLY axis troops or ONLY allied troops, thus determeining the winner as such a situation allows the area to be captured. The team that captures this win. )
2. dod_capture_point (to control attacking team's spawns)
3. dod_point_relay (for dod_capture_point)
4. dod_timer (set this to 30-60 sec. When it ends, it triggers the multimanager below.)
5. multimanager (triggers dod_point_relay which disables all attacking team's spawns so they can no longer spawn. Also triggers the Master to activate dod_capture_area)

You can have para gameplay.

Para no longer works in DoD.

[Edit] Glidas got there first :p

Yes I know it doesnt work, I was merley backing up what Doydy had said pffft :p

We could do what Glidas said, as para style would really suit this map but I would like the action to be drawn through a longer period. That's why I also reckon an Axis objective is to call for reinforcements. When this is completed the Allies can no longer spawn as their spawns become the resupply roots. Neway the map is under works now ;)

Funny how you've mentioned this idea, its pretty much exactly what my map is based on....a hidden underground network of tunnels that leads to a U-Boat pen (I will use trp.jeds model too!!)

I been working on this over a year now on and off, just not had time more recently!!

Heres a pic of the Pen:
I had a better pic but it was too big to attatch and when i tried compressing it I did it too much and lost all color :p The other pic showed the other end of the pen. At the moment that end lags as I just stacked about 20 crates there but on the final instead of the crates there will be the command room above it and an entrance via stairs (and maybe airvent) next to it.

I've been working on a U-Boat map for some time, actually. In fact, I'm the one who convinced Jed to make the U-Boat. :D I just haven't had time to really get at it on the map. :(
