Hi,

does anyone spare a few minutes to briefly explain whats involved in mapping? It interests me to the point where I'd like to create my own map but don't know whether it's a bit out of my league?
If anyone can shed any light on my dilemma I'd be most appreciative.

Paul.

Firstly you have to have alot of spare time and alot of paitence (spl?), I started mapping mid last year, I'm still learning it as I go now. Its not hard to get into, I've never done any programming, coding, modelling or 3d graphics on a Comp before yet I managed to pick it up pretty quickly. So if that gives you a guideline to what sort of skill level you need to get into this area I hope it helped. Also the people in the Mapping forum here are very helpful so when ever you don't understand something go to the Q & A subforum in here and ask your questions however stupid they may seem, or do a search first to find out if anyone else has had the same problem in the past ;)

Hmm the mapping FAQ should be edited, some links are dead...

About mapping, you'll need Hammer and why not other useful tools ther's a sticky in the Q&A sub-forum.
When you got it installed I highly recommand you to read the Hammer help files, all the pages. They'll show you how to configure it (which is the first, but hard part for a beginner. Not to mention the recent changes due to steam. Get GCFScape to benefit of all the dod ressources).

For the rest, it's difficult at the beginning but when you know the tools it is super cool. After the first compiles you'll quickly have to handle r_speeds, by learning how the engine works, the limits...

Welcome, and good luck chap.

LOL, I'll have to get the kids lego bricks out and start practicing then!

So I need some programs to download first. Where do I find these programs (I'll ask now so that if I dont find them now at elast I'll get somewhere tomorrow)?

Cheers guys,

Paul

I have always wanted to learn more on how to map, but the tutorials out there can be confussing to a person not sure how to start.
I found this link, they are for 3 Videos someone put together, they are very nicely done, he tends to go fast at times , but you can always replay it, it does do a good job of explaining the basics and showing you how to get started. I went from knowing how to barely make a box, to making a small very basic playable map in a few week of my spare time.

You'll need DIVX to play them, but they are a great source of info and how to work the tools.
